NICK CAVE TOUR POSTER 2017 18”x24" • Screen Print . HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY!! I’m a few days late on posting this. 9/22/22 was @nickcaveofficial 's birthday! In 2017, their management hit me up to design the tour poster. It was only available to the people that bought the VIP package - which also included a ticket to the show and a laminate with my work on it!!! Which I never got...grumblegrumble . This was a HUGE project for me. I LOOOOOOOOOOVE #NICKCAVE ’s music!! LOVE! So to get a chance to design a poster again for him was an honor. Even better - it was for the whole tour! In 2014 I got to design the poster for their Milwaukee, WI show! . If you scroll through - you can see the photo reference I took of my homie @a.sinners.heart posing as Nick Cave’s stunt double. He was in town when I started working on the project. . From there I sketched everything out in my sketchbook with a @prismacolor #colerase pencil. I had a small meltdown until my homie @dave_crosland talked me down from the ledge and helped me make sense of my composition. Then I lightboxed it onto an 8.5 x 11 sheet of #bristolboard and inked it with a @winsorandnewton series 7 sable brush. Then scanned it in at 600 dpi and did the coloring & color seps in photoshop! . Oh included is the alternate sketch I submitted but they felt the portrait of Cave was a better fit. NEVER THROW AWAY YOUR SKETCHES! I ended up using this for the @themurdercitydevils poster a few months later. WIN/WIN! And there's a pic of the art print I designed that was included with the 2017 tour poster drop - exclusive from my shop. . I was lucky enough to see the first date of the show with my best homie and amazing animator @crankbunny at the @kingsbklyn Such a beautiful theatre!!! I’m not sure about other artists but my materials affect my style. I can make a pen drawing look like brushwork but I don’t like it, it always feels phoney, and besides the tools have great qualities that I enjoy playing around with. So here is the same character drawn with different pens at different with different agendas. 1. @centropen_pl 0.7 on #bristolboard - DRAWN TODAY, direct without pencil ....2. @kuretakejapan #brushpen on Bristol - DRAWN weeks ago, direct without pencil ... 3. Digital G-Pen @clipstudioofficial DRAWN months ago over blue pencil #sketch. The last of these images shows the panel being built up. With the blue pencil sketch you always have more control and this is vital in drawing #comics. But I love the range and left-field stuff (incorporated screw-ups too!) that happens when you don’t plan it first. Detail of a collaboration I'm working on with one of the coolest photographers I've met @bryanhelm !!! PLEASE CHECK HIM OUT!!! . I can't wait to show off the rest of the piece! . I'm FINALLY trying out a comic book artist trick of printing the sketch in #blueline onto #bristolboard. The blue gets picked up by my scanner but is easily removed in photoshop!! It's saving me a ton of time during a deadline-heavy couple of months! I plan on doing more of my inking this way. . The inking part is still traditional. I use a @winsorandnewton series 7 sable size 0 brush and @fabercastellusa #pittpens. Thanks again to #fabercastell for sending me a box of them! Send more #nudgenudge! I use @alvindrafting circle templates @drphmartins #Blackstar #indiaink and mix it with a few drops of @rotringofficial #rapidograph ink. Exciting…I know. I don’t use white-out while inking. Just not a fan of how it yellows over time or worse - flakes away. Instead, I use an electric eraser. . . . The @FOOFIGHTERS A/Ps are now up in the shop!!! What's left of them at least!
