i think rafe and sarah’s mom was sexually abusive and i don’t think she died, but that ward forced her to disappear once he found out.
i mean think about it, we never see her in any family pictures, surely they would carry pieces of their late mother and wife, no? and throughout the show no one ever says “sorry for your loss” to the camerons, which is strange because death in a rich southern family would be gossiped about. it would be a thing. but with her, it’s silence.
and we know ward’s whole thing is getting rid of people, problems, and bodies without question. so it makes sense that if she was abusive, especially to rafe, ward would’ve erased her, not mourned her. she’s not remembered because she’s not “gone,” she’s just erased.
it would explain so much about their characters. rafe’s entire personality is like a symptom of something we never see, right? he doesn’t just act entitled and angry, he acts like someone who grew up violated and then silenced. he craves control, he mixes sex with violence, he can’t just be casually intimate — it’s all laced with shame and that reads like a kid who was sexualized way too early, who never learned safety, only power games. his desperation for ward’s approval even makes more sense if he sees ward as the man who “protected” him from his mom by making her disappear.
i’m also sure rafe has bpd, and it would make sense if it ties back to sexual trauma. his entire personality is swinging extremes — he craves love and then pushes it away, he spirals if he feels abandoned, he clings to ward but also rages against him. he’s hypersensitive, self-destructive, obsessed with controlling how others see him. that’s bpd energy, but it’s like turbocharged by the sexual abuse, because he never got to build a healthy identity. he’s stuck in this endless loop of “please don’t leave me / i’ll make you leave me”
then sarah — her silence about her mom is so loud. sarah romanticizes everything, she’s the nostalgic one. if her mom really died, she’d talk about her, she’d carry stories, she’d have some memory she clings to. but she doesn’t. not one. that fits if she was abused too, but instead of exploding like rafe, she represses it, cuts her mother out of her narrative completely.
she’s the flip side, emotionally avoidant, she runs instead of confronting, and can’t handle intimacy. wheezie literally implied that sarah cheated on all her boyfriends once things got serious, like the second she has to open up or be seen, she sabotages. which… makes sense if sex and love got tied to danger in her childhood.
and ward in all of this is so obvious… like he covered it up because it would ruin the cameron image. his entire character is about controlling the story, so instead of letting his kids face what happened, he erases their mom and demands silence. he doesn’t heal them, he molds them. rafe into his heir, sarah into his perfect daughter, and when they resist, he cracks down harder.
then rose?? rose is their stepmom, and she feels like the ‘replacement wife’ brought in to stabilize appearances. she doesn’t nurture, she just manages. and that distance makes sense if she knows what happened but refuses to touch it. she benefits from the silence, so she plays the role and nothing more.
and honestly? i don’t even think wheezie is ward’s. she feels like rose’s kid from a previous relationship. she doesn’t look like them, she doesn’t carry the same shame rafe and sarah do, but she’s observant and curious. she’s not traumatized in the same way because she didn’t live through what they did, she just grew up watching it. and that’s why she’s always in the background, ignored, almost like a ghost in her own house. she’s not part of the original cameron wound, but she lives in its shadow.
