I don’t know why I didn’t post about this while I had it on my mind but when I read Yellowfang’s Secret last year I remember being genuinely so shocked that Brightflower was THAT quick to jump at Yellowfang for the death of her kits… there’s a lot of critiques I have towards her with the way she handled it, but I assume she was probably so struck by grief that she wasn’t thinking rationally

Dawncloud, Brightflower and Ashfur [ShC]
When BrightFlower was young she wanted nothing more than to be a nursery queen, to take care of the young of the clan. So imagine everyone’s surprise when she announces she’s expecting so quickly after she becomes a warrior. She never says who the father is, everyone just assumes it was a loner, but soon enough she gives birth to two little bundles of joy: her son MintKit and her daughter MarigoldKit. They were everything to her, but her happiness wouldn’t last as long as she hoped. BrokenStar kill her kits and frames the medicine cat YellowFang for it, even when BrokenStar was exiled her pain didn’t lesson her kits were still dead and nothing would change that.
When her brother ScorchWind and their best friend RussetFur had kits, even though it was only out of duty for the clan, it felt like insult to injury. They got to watch their sons (RowanClaw and CedarHeart) grow up, become apprentices, become warriors, even got to see their son RowanClaw find love in another cat. So after the Great Journey she was all but ready to retire early to the elders den when RussetFur brought her 4 new born kittens (their loner mother died in childbirth) she started acting like her old self again, but it didn’t go as well as RussetFur hoped. When the two she-kits had a resemblance to her dead kits BrightFlower all but convinced herself that Star Clan had given her kits back to her, she named them MintKit and MarigoldKit after them and named the boys FernKit and ThriftKit.
To say BrightFlower had bad coping mechanisms would be an understatement. She doesn’t pay much attention to her son’s outside of being clan mates, she raises Mint as a boy and dotes on Marigold. After a long conversation with RussetFur she tries to be a parent to her kids, though Thrift, Mint and Marigold don’t really hold much against her, The 3 of them all just figured their mom had unresolved issues. Fern on the other hand refuses to move on from the past, it doesn’t help when ThriftPaw dies in a battle with Wind Clan, he and his sisters become warriors FernTail, MintFur and MarigoldWhisker. BrightFlower gives them leaf necklaces (A sign of apology and remorse in Shadow Clan) at their warrior ceremony, but FernTail’s bitterness towards her remains, and the Dark Forest is eager to take advantage of that.
