He had everything planned and then things started to go south but he couldn't wait any longer so he did it anyway. The speech? It was pure perfection.

After the break-up, Buck googles "LGBTQIA+ Tv Shows" and that's how he finds out that Schitt's Creek exists. He puts the episodes on while he bakes and he has so much fun. The plot isn't that complicated to follow so it helps him decompress after a hard day at work and helps to keep his mind away from Tommy.
That is until Patrick Brewer makes his appearance. Buck's hooked and invested in his and David's relationship and things start to hit close to home. David is Patrick's first relationship with a man. Patrick is David's first serious relationship. That's familiar.
He's impressed by the storytelling, he understands why David needed a break after the shocking news of Patrick being engaged before and he also understands why Patrick didn't tell him about Rachel right away.
He thinks about Tommy and their relationship and he's constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop because it can't work out in the end, right? David's gonna have doubts, David's gonna tell Patrick "hey, I love you but I'm your first and you'll break my heart irreparably once you decide I'm not worthy." Except he finishes the show and nothing bad happens, he watches David and Patrick have their happy ending. He watches them getting married and becoming husbands. Happily ever after.
It's three am because he couldn't stop watching and he doesn't actually care, he drives to Tommy's and knocks on his door and starts rambling, telling him about the show, about David and Patrick and yeah it's fictional but it's not true that your first can't be your last.
Tommy's taken aback and he doesn't get what's really going on until Buck kisses him fiercely, telling him "you make me feel right" and apologising because he actually stole that line from a fictional character but Tommy cuts him off with a long, passionate kiss. They talk all night long and in the morning, once they have kissed and made out thoroughly, Buck shows Tommy Patrick and David's story on YouTube.
(Tommy cries. And then tells Buck that he's his Mariah Carey.)

Love this arc. This is David's ultimate sacrifice. Everything he dreamed of was to return back to his big city life and now he's giving that up for the sake of his relationship.
