Grammar

The plain form of a verb in Japanese expresses that it is happening now or will happen in the future, and it is used in casual, not formal, conversation. All plain form verbs end with the う sound (but not necessarily the う hiragana). For example, 食べる, 買う, and 読む are all the plain form of their respective verbs.

When expressing that you like doing something, you would use the plain form of the verb and add ～のが好きです. For example, 「食べるのが好きです」 means “I like eating.” 「アニメを見るのが好きです」means “I like watching anime.”

You can replace 好き (from the previous section) with any adverb or adjective to describe a verb, making the sentence structure [verb] のが [adv or adj] です. For example,「テニスをするのが下手です」 means “My tennis-playing is bad.”

Adding だ to the end of a sentence declares that the previous statement is true in a declarative manner.

Grammar

を is a marker used to signify that the previous word is the target of a verb and, when used this way, is pronounced 「お」 instead of the typical sound for を. For example, in the sentence 「水を飲みます」, 水 (みず) is a noun that is the target of the verb 飲みます (のみます).

Grammar

[X] より [Y] のほうが [adj] です。Compared to [X], [Y] is more [adj]. or [Y] is more [adj] than [X].

お [verb] ください。Please [verb]. The most common way of asking someone to do something is using a verb’s て-form. This is not the case with the 敬語 (けいご) form, the polite or honorific way of speaking to someone, like a shopkeeper would to a customer, for example. In this case, you take the stem of the verb from the  〜ます form and add お〜 as a prefix.

A good way to learn a language is through immersion! Though I may be quite far from Japan, there are ways that I immerse myself in the language from home. One of those ways is through one of my favorite games that I play: Minecraft! In Japan, Minecraft is colloquially referred to by its shorthand, マイクラ.
