Mini Review - Bravely Default
Nintendo 3DS - Beat 12/16/2025
I don't know where to start with this one honestly. I had bought this game on release after playing a demo for a while, started it, and then put it down before even getting through the first chapter for reasons that I do not know.
I decided to pick it up recently and then start up a new file in this game, even though the servers were long gone so I couldn't get streetpasses.
I will say this, I do NOT know why I never gone through this game sooner because there was so much that I loved in this game. The job system was darn cool and fun to experiment with even though some jobs were so much more overpowered than others (Ninja ended up absolutely carrying my butt thru SO many bosses for sure). The characters are great as well with their own dynamics and personality too with one another, and I even found myself super liking the characters that you had to fight against thru the game too. (I think Victor and Alternis both became huge favourites of mine throughout the game)
Graphically, I think it looks good. Nothing amazing for the 3DS, but I do like the chibi asthethic myself even tho I can see it being divisive for some people. The artstyle makes me think of trying to translate some of the older FF sprite style to models and kind of also makes me think of the DS remakes of FF3 and FF4 a little bit too.
Gameplay is your standard turn based battle with the ability to stock actions (default) which then can be used in later turns (brave) which I feel is an added layer of resource management. I like it and it works well, Spamming the brave button does trivialize the common enemy fights, but they are supposed to be trivial I feel. But the bosses are balanced to where you cannot win by just spamming brave turn 1 either. Some bosses later one becomes a test of figuring out what combinations works for jobs as well. Also, I like the fact that I can turn random encounters off too, sure it means no exp gain or grinding, but being able to do this helps a LOT later on.
Which comes to one of the major things that is both a plus and a minus to this game. The story. I love the story itself and the way it unfolds a lot. Especially how it ends up coming to the ending too. But the biggest issue with this game comes to 'THAT' part. There are a good batch of chapters in the game that start to feel very much like a slog to get through for reasons that I cannot spoil and it slowed up my pace in playing the game a LOT when I got there. This is an area that is a common complaint too but I don't know how to best get around the reason for that huge halt in the pacing because it DOES work on a narrative end so darn much. It is just not fun to play through those parts at all at a point. Fortunately the last chapter is darn good enough of an incentive to get through that long slog there in the game and get one to finish it.
Also I will say this, the soundtrack is absolutely wonderful. I really like it so much, especially some of the ending fight musics too.
I mentioned about streetpass before, this is used for basically a sort of 'idle' village rebuilding thing. It is very much possible to do it without streetpass as well. Being someone who is often busy I leave my console in sleep mode a lot while I'm at work, so a lot of work for the village rebuilding was able to get done because it does count time while in sleep mode. So I didn't mind that at all, I can see the slow pace of the village rebuilding without streetpasses to help speed it up to be atrocious for people who don't have busy lives though. But for me it was perfect to use.
In the end, this game is still a very high recommendation for me to pick up and play, especially if you were a fan of the classic style Final Fantasy games too.
