They call it "Brain Transparency" in which headsets will scan your brain to make sure you're focusing on work and only on work. And joke that if you don't want to use it, you can just get fired. When I heard brain scanning teach was getting really accurate around 2012, and could even get close to picturing what people where looking at. I was "concerned" to say the least. 11 years later. In one way it was stated (back then) it could help with neurological issues and people in comas, but also could help improve "work effective focus monitoring"... So Yeah I wonder which path of research got most of the funding

Rapid advances in brain scanning technology and its capacity to “read” human minds mean that there is a pressing need to plan for how and when we will use it in the future. fMRI enables researchers to observe which areas of the brain are most active when people perform particular tasks, experience specific emotions, or imagine certain scenarios. Although it has important limitations, researchers suggest that it could make ideas that once seemed science fiction a reality.

On Twitter this week I joked that neuroscientists could save money on brain scanners by just asking people how active their brains are.

However, it turns out that there has already been a study that actually asked people to do this, as I found out thanks to Niclas Kuper’s very helpful reply.

This paper came out back in April (not April 1st) but I missed it at the time. It’s called Self-rated amygdala activity: an auto-biological index of affective distress

In this study, the authors asked 63 people to estimate their own ‘threat-related amygdala activity’ (TRA). The same participants had earlier taken part in an fMRI study in which TRA was measured using an emotional faces task.

It turned out that the participants weren’t able to accurately report their own TRA – there was no absolutely no correlation between the self-report ratings and the actual fMRI-measured TRA.
