Have you heard how curiously the sea churns?
Like a storm, but like the rain, only gentle, like dripping water...
It bellows, from deep inside of me...
Here it comes, up through my insides...
But gently, like little droplets...

I have a question of a little detail i never seen explained or discussed. One of the brain fluid dropped by the patient of the research all say this:"Once, a young girl had an older brother who was determined to become a doctor, and so she wilfully became his patient. etc... Who are the brother and the sister? Laurence and Maria? Laurence discover the blood and given it to Maria and this is the start of the scism from byrgenwerth and foundation of the healing churcs?
Okay so, this is the unfortunate reply that I accidentally deleted a few seconds after I typed it.
So here we go, I’m re-writing it today.
“Greyish amoeba-shaped brain fluid. Wobbles and bounces.Extracted from a patient whose head expanded until that was all that they were.In the early days of the Healing Church, the Great Ones were linked to the ocean, and so the cerebral patients would imbibe water, and listen for the howl of the sea. Brain fluid writhed inside the head, the initial makings of internal eyes.Once, a young girl had an older brother who was determined to become a doctor, and so she wilfully became his patient. In the end, this led to their encounter with the Eldritch Truth, for which they considered themselves blessed.
We fail to realize our own latent potential, until the moment it is lost, and we sense its absence. Ironically, this is the very nature of insight, like the moment one licks one’s own blood, only to be startled by its sweetness.“ [Brain Fluid]
I think it’s safe to say that the sister in question is Adeline or any of the female patients in the research hall since they are those involved in the brain fluid quest. There is no proof, in canon, that Laurence even knew who Maria was and depending on who you ask, Amelia is the best candidate to fill up the role of Laurence’s sister or daughter (there was a theory on Reddit discussing this possibility a while ago). No clue about who the brother could be. But my money isn’t on Laurence or anyone we know about, in all honesty.
There is also no concrete evidence that Maria was a student of Byrgenwerth at any point and that is why it always puzzles me when people describe her as such. I am not saying that it’s not plausible, just that I am surprised by the sheer number of theories taking this as a fact. In my head, hunters and scholars don’t mix. The line between the two groups gets a bit blurred when it comes to Healing Church members such as Yurie and Edgar but I’m getting sidetracked here, sorry.
The Laurence/Willem schism per se is a rather complex matter because isn’t really clear what the real difference between the two schools of thought is.
Yes, we can simplify things saying that…
Laurence = let’s use the blood.
Willem = let’s not use the blood and let’s find other ways to obtain Insight.
…except for the fact that it isn’t true. Willem’s students did use the blood. Quite OFTEN, actually:
Liquid medicine concocted at Byrgenwerth. Calms the nerves. Those who delve into the arcane fall all-too-easily to madness, and thick human blood serves to calm the frayed nerves of these inquisitive minds. Naturally, this often leads to a reliance on blood ministration. [Sedative]
But at the same time it’s absolutely true that Willem wasn’t fond of such practice:
Provost Willem would have been proud of Caryll’s runes, as they do not rely upon blood in any measure. [Rune Workshop Tool]
Willem’s reasoning sounds more like that of a religious figure perpetuating a dogmatic doctrine than that of a scientist if you ask me. Even the use of the word ‘betray’ isn’t something I would expect from a man of science bidding farewell to a former pupil who just happens to have different ideas. Especially when what is being ‘betrayed’ is not a code of ethics (because let’s face it, Byrgenwerth has none! XD) but what sounds like Willem’s own set of rules.
We can all agree that Willem offered Laurence some good advice and that being prudent is always a good way to approach things we do not understand but the way this concept is worded (in the form of an ‘adage’) makes it sound very dogmatic.
