Bound (2016) - Pose + Background/Setting Practice
DO NOT REPOST | REBLOGS APPRECIATED
Haha so I kind of forgot to post this when I finished it a couple of months ago? Anyway, have a pose/background practice I did using a character/setting from a semi-obscure game I’m mildly obsessed with.
Anyway, this is The Princess from Bound (2016). I’ve never played the game but I watched a friend play it once and I’ve been obsessed with the aesthetic and character design ever since. The Princess isn’t completely accurate to game but I tried my best!
What inspired me to draw The Princess was the fact that she moves entirely by dance moves, which provided a lot of poses I’ve never tried to draw before. Originally this was just suppose to be the pose, but then I colored her, and then I looked at the games setting. The world the majority of the game takes place in his filled with a lot of simple shapes, so I ended up emulating it since I needed practice with settings and backgrounds.
I’m REALLY proud with how this turned out :)

I finally played Bound the other day. It's a PS4 exclusive I've had my eyes on since E3 2016. It received mixed reviews of people admiring it for its beauty and original aesthetic but also dissatisfaction at how unchallenging the puzzles are. The developers set out to create an artistic experience, best completed in one sitting. There is an inbuilt speedrunning mode that provides further challenge.
If you think the trailer looks interesting I definitely recommend it. If you ever looked at a piece of modern art and thought 'this would look cool in a video game' then you're looking for Bound. The protagonist's movements are entirely made up of incredibly fluid jazz ballet dancing. I was particularly impressed by how the dancing and the environments are seemingly tied together by the soundtrack, composed of piano and electronica.
The story is a simple one. Mild spoilers if you want to get into it without knowing anything: I thought it would be a fantasy setting like Journey or Monument Valley but it's actually a trip into the mindscape of a woman reminiscing about her childhood and how she uses dancing as a way of self-empowerment to overcome the fears that hold her back. It's self-contained and personal and delivers a good emotional impact.
Overall great game that deserves more attention.
