Bory Castle
Bory Castle is located in Székesfehérvár, Hungary. The castle was built between 1923-1959 by Hungarian sculptor and architect Jeno Bory, who built and decorated his home with the help of his wife and students. The castle is a mix of architectural styles, including Gothic, Renaissance, and Romanesque. Bory considered his castle a work of art, and he designed and built the castle from the dungeon to the towers, extending his creation every year. The castle can be found in the Guinness Book of Worlds Records as the largest building built by one man. Mostly built of concrete, instead of brick or stone, the castle stands thirty meters high, has seven towers, two terraces, arcades filled with statuary, outdoor murals, and the Hundred Pillared Courtyard, named after the 103 pillars that hold the arcuate corridors. The interior boasts 30 rooms, including a chapel, a studio gallery, three studios, and spiral staircases. Paintings, mosaics, antiques, ornate columns, and statues fill the castle, while gardens, fountains, ponds, sculptures, mosaics, and glass paintings enhance the exterior. Bory Castle was opened to the public in 1934. It was restored in 1980 by Bory’s grandsons. Today, the castle serves as a museum. It’s open to the public, except for the portion of the castle where Jeno Bory’s great-grandsons live.
