LONDON — President Donald Trump has berated and threatened America’s NATO allies. Now he wants these same countries to help unblock the Strait of Hormuz — and their response has not exactly been enthusiastic.

“This is not our war, we have not started it,” German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius told reporters Monday.

That appeared to sum up the mood among U.S. allies, with leaders from Berlin to London expressing reservations about Trump’s demands and indicating they had no immediate plans to provide military support to reopen the crucial waterway.

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer made a surprise visit to Kyiv to reaffirm UK support for Ukraine.

Sir Keir Starmer has arrived in Kyiv to sign what Downing Street is calling a "landmark 100-year partnership" with Ukraine. The pact would formalise economic and military support already pledged to the country, and offers more. It is the prime minister's first visit to the country since taking office last summer, in a show of support for Ukraine days before Donald Trump re-enters the White House. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is keen to discuss firm security guarantees from key allies such as the UK, wary that a new US administration could start pushing Ukraine to make peace with Russia. [ ... ] Speaking as he travelled to the country, Sir Keir said: "This is not just about the here and now, it is also about an investment in our two countries for the next century." "[Russian President Vladimir] Putin's ambition to wrench Ukraine away from its closest partners has been a monumental strategic failure. Instead, we are closer than ever, and this partnership will take that friendship to the next level," he added.

The visit comes just days before pro-Russia Donald Trump is to be sworn into office in the US.

Sir Keir's visit also takes place just a day after Germany's defense minister paid a visit.

We need to face the fact that Russia is at war with us. The Cold War effectively resumed shortly after Putin took power 25 years ago and he has gradually ramped up his aggressiveness. His intention all along has been to restore the Soviet Union in all but name.
