oh boy. here’s where i admit that the vague concept of sunshowers has existed in some corner of my brain for years. as in way before i was into svt and before the group even existed.

back when i was a teen and pretty into several different anime/manga series, i was always into creating ocs that either expanding upon the universe (you can probably tell i’m still a fan of world-building) or, in a way that now feels particularly teen-aged to me, creating ocs that felt like they bucked whatever the trend was for ocs in any given fandom. like, teen veille got a real kick out of writing hopeless disasters when all she could find were oc fics about prodigies and secret heirs or whatnot. so, naturally, when i got into a series that features gangs predominately and started seeing ocs on my sites of the time for prolific gang members and leaders of their own notorious groups, teen!veille turned on sheila franklin/i believe in love and created a character who was a leader in a peace movement. and obviously her love interest was involved in gangs.

anyway, i never really got that far with writing anything substantial with that ancient oc, but the idea kind of stuck in my head. but i think there must have been some gang related fic or a few in the svt tag that made me suddenly think of it. and perhaps it was a bit of that lingering buck-the-trend from my teen years that went ‘write it’ – that, or maybe i had listened to the hair soundtrack again and had my memory jogged of that story line i never fully realized despite really liking the concept. i’ll admit i don’t 100% remember since it’s been a while since i wrote the fic.

beyond the whole ‘star-crossed’ sort of idea of peace activist and gang member, sunshowers doesn’t really resemble any story i ever imagined with that original concept. for one, both the mc and minghao are “leveled down” so to speak to just being members of their respective groups. i knew from when i started outlining it that i wanted minghao to be portrayed not as hardened gangster who gets off on violence, but as a person who was drawn into the group because of the sense of community it brought with it; who sort of ended up in this deep end without ever really intending it, and who equally doesn’t really see alternatives for himself. or even really think to pursue them, because he’s found “his people”. at the same time, the crowd he’s in does make him feel like he needs a tough front of sorts. which is why the story opens with him scolding himself for jumping at a loud noise and why the first thing he says to the mc is a harsher question than what motivated him to check on her.

the story is really about minghao, and the way his perspective on things gets toppled and turned around by meeting the mc, but i did want her to feel like she was a person who existed beyond just to get him out of his gang. and that, in fast, the amount of life that she has is part of the reason why minghao falls so hard and becomes motivated to become more part of hers. so that’s one of the reasons why it was important for me to write scenes of minghao seeing the mc with friends in some scenes. but still, she is at heart an idealist. a strong one, who isn’t entirely naive, but who still deeply believes in the best in people. and, more importantly, in minghao being a good person. so it breaks her heart in a way when she initially finds out about him being in seventeen.

ultimately, though, her choice to forgive him is still based on that core belief. and upon her experiences with him. she chooses to side with what she knows of him from the time they’ve spent together than with what she can assume about him from the simple knowledge of him being part of a gang. and as the mc says when they decide to leave the city together – part of her hopes as a member of the whole anti-gang group is to get gang members to realize they don’t need gangs to be part of a community. and the choice to runaway with him is, in many ways, her deciding to accomplish something with her idealism even if it’s only getting one person out of it all. but it doesn’t feel like settling because of the importance minghao has taken on in her heart.

whether or not the two of them really make it as a couple in the long run is up to the reader’s imagination of their lives together after they get off that train.

the first thing that came to mind was revisiting whatever you’d call the au this flash fic takes place in where there’s an eternal sunshine-esque company that offers memory alteration/erasure.

i think i’d stick with joshua and expand upon the story; but the mc would change from josh’s ex to a worker at the omicog clinic who worked on joshua’s case with erasing the break up from the flash fic. except this worker mc is a big part of the reason why joshua decided just to alter his memories of the break up and not erase his ex entirely – when joshua comes into the clinic he recognizes the mc and is inevitably a little further heartbroken when he realizes they must have had him erased from their memories some time ago.

and maybe the mc eventually figures this out and starts doing some digging of their own to try to figure why they’d ever want to erase joshua, who seems like such a nice guy from the experience they’ve had working with him through his recent troubles
