Prison Break || Drabble
"After a car chase through the streets of NYC, convicted criminal Rhys Barton, found guilty of attempting to murder his sister, died yesterday when his car flipped and exploded on a crowded street. Barton, who escaped from a maximum security prison two weeks ago, had seemingly dropped off the grid when he was arrested for assaulting another man in a bar. Moments before he was due to go back to the prison, he ran away and stole a car, cutting through all traffic and narrowly avoiding several pedestrians.
The car exploded when it rolled after hitting the curb. Several shoppers suffered from minor burns. Barton was not able to escape the vehicle before it exploded, and was declared deceased at the scene. Police say that how Barton escaped is not clear, but it was evident that he was more than the Biochemist that he claimed he was.
Now John, what do you think about….”
Rhys scoffed and turned away from the TV and back to his beer. At least they hadn’t shown his picture on the screen. The bartender, looking up at the screen in interest, shook his head. “Unbelievable. Who shoots their sister? Why?” Raising an eyebrow, Rhys took a sip of the beer and shrugged a reply. “I dunno, they can be pretty annoying most of the time.”
The bartender turned to look at him in shock. “… Joking.” He muttered before downing the last of his beer and standing. His neutral expression had taken on a slightly colder tone, and he exited the bar with a hand clenched in a fist. Rhys could hardly believe he'd just said that. Ater everything that happened, and he joked about it? No wonder everyone hated him. He was starting to hate himself. Not that he didn't hate himself before- no, this was more loathing himself.
Walking up the street a bit, he tried to think of a game plan. Rhys had no idea what his next move would be. To be honest, after accidentally killing that guy back in the prison, he had not really thought past just getting out. Supposing he could just go home, he hailed a cab. Telling the driver the address, he sat back in the seat and sighed.
It was a miracle he hadn't been recognised. Yet. He guessed that it would only be a matter of time until someone did. He'd have to stay away from everyone that didn't know he was anything other than a scientist, stop getting arrested for stupid things... All in all, a lot of things he's have to change. New credit cards, apartment, identity. He had better start thinking about all of this. He'd heard of the fall of SHIELD- thank god he wasn't around when that mess had happened- but it would have been nice to have had some help in starting over.
Half an hour later, the taxi pulled up outside his old apartment block. Paying the driver, Rhys stepped out of the vehicle and stood on the curb, hands on his hips, and looked at the old building for a moment. He was gonna miss it. But first...
He went up through the fire escape. Less chance of coming across any residents. Jimmying the living room window open, he clambered through to have the widow drop down onto his leg. With force. "moThER fuCKER--" He yelled, pulling his leg out and falling over onto the floor with a thump. Hoping that no-one had heard, he stood and limped the short distance to the sofa.
Falling down onto it, he straightened at the sound of slow footsteps. Turning his head, he half-stood up at the sight of a very dark, very angry looking Shanta. Uh-oh. Swallowing, stood up again. 'You prepared for this.' Rhys reminded himself. He took a deep breath and prepared to explain himself.
But before he could make a sound, Shanta had walked the short distance towards him and gave him a hard slap across the face. She spoke, voice low, furious. "I cannot believe you, Rhys Barton. You ESCAPE from prison, FAKE your death- do you KNOW how long Lex has been crying?"
Rhys stood there, face completely blank, waiting for her to finish. Before she could, however, there was the sound of more footsteps. Looking across, Rhys' heart dropped to see the face of Alexia streaked with tears.
Alexia stared at her brother for a few seconds before she started to walk over. He gave her a small smile before Shanta grabbed her arm. "No, Lex--"
"Shanta, but he--"
"NO. He tried to kill you. Who knows what else he might do." Still fuming, Shanta turned to face Rhys. "I don't know why you escaped," Rhys opened his mouth to reply, but was cut off. "-- but if you think that I magically forgive you, you are more stupid than everyone first thought. Come on Lex, we're staying at my place tonight."
With a hard stare at him, Shanta marched out of the door. Lex hesitated but started to follow, leaving Rhys to stare after them with unseen tears in his eyes.
No matter what he did, they would never forgive him completely.
What else did he expect?
