"For most of history, anonymous was a woman"
- Virginia Wolf
the bookish breakfast tag 🥞🫐🍳🥓🍊🥯🍓
if you're seeing this, answer one of the prompts below! 💜
I'm on a "fantasy reading" online group and I kid you not, someone said
"Oh I liked Sarah J Maas books... they're not Game of Thrones, but at least she finished her saga".
THEY'RE NOT MEANT TO BE COMPARED.
One is high fantasy written by an author who spends time and research to do a believable world building and plot, because fantasy is based on that! No good fantasy is written fast!
One is an author who writes smut - oh no wait, y'all call it romantasy sorry - with some vague fairy villas in the background and a plot that is easily beaten by the Twilight Saga.
THE SPEED IS NOT THE FLEX YOU THINK IT IS. It's the ultimate proof of bad quality.
AND IT'S TWO. DIFFERENT. GENRES.
No. Don't even try to argue.
I'll come at you with the rage of someone who has read actual fantasy since 20 years, way before fucking booktok, and saw her shelves ruined by romance who could NOT stay in its lane.
I’m truly surprised and sad there isn’t a bigger fandom for The Winnowing Flame trilogy by Jen Williams . I don’t know why, is it because it’s not romantasy or not YA? (No shade on those types of books, although they can get trope-y)
They are really good. I can fully reccomend them to anyone that likes fantasy but is tired of heteronormativity and isn’t too keen on purely political intrigue and doesn’t want to choose one type of fantasy or between dark stuff and whimsy.
It has interesting worldbuilding, great writing that kept me interested despite my ADHD, great characters (majority of them women!), that are interesting and also some fucked up stuff. And multiple queer characters. Aaaaand mythical beasts.
if anyone wants to talk about them, I’m open to it (my dms might not work because of stuff, but you can also comment if you wanna share fanfic or fanart or something or books similar to them).
