Question of the month...who has not read The Testaments by Margaret Atwood? If you haven’t, are you planning on it? 💚 I had the pleasure of seeing Margaret Atwood live last night here in Vancouver (see IG stories). I was worried she might cancel her book tour after the recent passing of her longtime partner, writer and environmentalist, Graeme Gibson. Ultimately, she decided to continue her tour. She respectfully came out dress in all black but did have a lovely colourful scarf around her neck. The sight of this brought a smile to my face. She seemed upbeat, despite her circumstances, and was intelligent and witty as ever! She shared one of her favourite books with us and I would like to share it with you. It’s called The Gift by Lewis Hyde. It is a classic study of gift giving and its relationship to art. Atwood discovered the book in the summer of 1984 while she was writing The Handmaid’s Tale. I can’t wait to get my hands on this book which sounds like a treasure. 💚 Now onto my feelings about The Testaments...I am not normally a fan of sequels but of course, I just had to read this one. I liked whenever I came across a connection of biblical/real world politics. For example, Schlafly Café, where the aunts ate is a nod to conservative anti-abortion lawyer Phyllis Schlafly. I also enjoyed learning more about Gilead’s history. I thoroughly enjoyed reading all the Aunt Lydia sections. Where the book fell short for me was the sections with the two younger girls, Agnes and Daisy. I felt their characters and storylines could have been much stronger. As much as I love this creative outlet and connecting with everyone here, I think it is super important not to be addicted to it.
