Happy holidays bookstagram! Ace of spades by Faridah Abike-Iyimide was my favorite YA of this year! However, I didn’t see a ton on mentions or fanfare for this gem. This book was definitely the most underrated book of the year for me . It’s dark academia, teenage angst, suspense and thriller done to perfection 👌🏾(for a full synopsis see post from earlier this year). What’s up bookstagram ?!? I hope that you are having a happy Wednesday 🤗. I finished up with Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler yesterday and I really enjoyed this book y’all. Parable of the Sower is one of those books that leaves a lasting impression on you long after you’ve read it . This book hits on so many themes (religion, racism,hope, change etc) coupled with the fact that story’s setting is in a dystopian society, those themes seem to be amplified like 10 times over 😁. The story is being told from the perspective of 15 year old Lauren Olamina between the years 2024 and 2027. She lives in a gated community with her father who is a preacher, her stepmother and her brothers. They live in Robledo, California a city 20 miles outside Los Angeles and essentially California as well as the rest of the United States has become an dystopian society. This book very heavy on religion and what religion means to Lauren. Religion seems to be the overarching theme throughout the book. Lauren has her own ideas about God despite the fact that her father is a Baptist Preacher. Lauren is young but she seemed to be very focused on change and helping those around her understand who and what God is to them. I really enjoyed the fact that the story is told in first person because it felt like I was experiencing the madness and the trauma along side Lauren. I’m very curious to see what happens next, so I will be continuing on to the next book Parable of the Talents very soon ! Have you read Parable of the Sower?
