Natural Stone Pot
Received a very nice gift from my students in the UK, this Natural Stone Pot. I think my Twist Maple will look great planted in it. The reddish color in the stone should complement the tree’s bark nicely.

The never ending saga of finding the right pot…
Picked up this rustic, handmade pot yesterday at the PBA Bonsai Festival. It is shallower than many of the pots trees are already growing in, so it’s for future use.
New Pot!
Just picked up today from the potter, a friend in the local Bonsai Club, a new custom made pot for my Cascading Dawn Redwood (scroll down to see). Thinking I might rub it down with Olive Oil to give it a bit of a sheen. I’ll try a bit on the bottom and see how it looks.
If the weather and time allows, I’ll pot up the Redwood in it tomorrow. So watch for photos…
Dragonfly Styles…
Was thinking, dragonflies would be great from bonsai pots, they’re predators that eat other insects. Samurai often used dragonfly designs on their armor and sword guards because they can only fly forward.
Created this little style sheet for a friend who makes bonsai pots and wants to add dragonflies to his next work. The Wong shapes, body types, different tails, can be mixed and matched.

It can be surprisedly difficult to find just the right pot you are looking for. There are literally thousands available online. But when you need a certain size, and want a specific style to match your tree… sometimes you just can’t find it. Fortunately I met Doug French at the local Northern Virginia Bonsai Society (https://www.nvbsbonsai.org/). And he made me with wonderful pot for repotting my Swamp Cypress.
Bit rough still, but working on some of the details for a pot for my Bonsai/Penzai. Drawing on all the scales is the most tedious chore. The temptation is to draw them larger and longer to just get the job done. Of course that wouldn’t look right. So I just do a bit at a time. I think artists in the past would have literally killed for a pencil with an eraser. The pot could be either round or four sided.
I tre amici dell'inverno
