The penny-farthing was invented in the 1870s, and its popularity peaked in the 1880s. It was a significant improvement over the earlier "boneshaker" bicycles, as the larger front wheel allowed for smoother rides over rough roads and provided greater speed due to the greater distance covered with each rotation of the pedals. However, the high riding position and lack of effective brakes made it quite dangerous, especially when riding downhill or attempting to stop quickly.
