Went back to our usual spots for probably our last chantrelle hunt of the season. Didn’t find much, and the lack of any specimens past their prime suggests the area had been heavily hunted this season. Did find some big bones though!

Heyyy anyone know something about bone identification? I found these in an owl pellet and assumed they were part of the mouse, but now I'm not sure. And I want to make sure I didn't take bird bones by accident or anything ;_;

You were right, that's a raccoon skull :>! It's a younger one too. Looks like a sub-adult? Deffo was under 2 years old because the nasals and cranium aren't fused and bone texture still looks porous.

Hi there! You found yourself a partial opossum skull! This is the back end of the skull—the brain case with that massive sagittal crest which is one the the easiest ways to ID opossum skulls—and the zygomatic process of the temporal bone. Here's a complete one for reference (large adult with a small juvenile). Fun find!
