Bold Glitter getting some moral support for her veterinary procedure’s today. No show for us... instead an old bump on her back that hadn’t bothered her before decided to come to a head and rupture some pus last night. The vet came out today for what we thought would be a cyst lancing, but once she opened it up she found firm white tissue. It is likely a fibrous tumor that outgrew it’s blood supply and started to die, hence the pus that surfaced. She removed as much tumor as she could and it will be sent for biopsy.
Tomorrow is Glitter’s first schooling show (weather permitting) and we will be trying Intro C! Today I took her to the outdoor arena at work, which she had never seen before and which had a white fence set up, to simulate the experience for a dry run.
At first she was TENSE, very overstimulated and resistant. It was just a matter of waiting her out with steady rein pressure while coaxing her forward, and she eventually relaxed and started to focus. I don’t carry a whip or use spurs on a baby like this because moments like this are just confusion or fear, and I want to ease her through it rather than force or push her.
Our biggest hang up right now is the left lead canter. She just wants to throw her shoulder to the outside and slice in on the circle, so I really have to focus on almost leg yielding her out during the transition to keep her inside shoulder lifted. Finished with a run through of the test, which wasn’t perfect but not bad. Hoping the weather holds up so we can try this in public tomorrow!

I did my best to fit my training ride on Bold Glitter in before the storm, but it ended up cutting the ride short. When we started it was just cloudy... soon after the cold wind picked up and we could hear thunder in the distance. This was a tough situation, because of course she was tense and anxious, but I always want to end on a good note! But the longer I tried to find a good ending spot, the worse the weather got, so of course she got more tense. You can’t rush progress, especially on a young OTTB, so riding on a timer is not a good way to work and I just had to quit while I was more or less ahead. This is what the weather became just seconds after we ran into the barn. Hoping for a better ride when it all dries up!

Used the Pivo in the field again today, this time with a tripod. This is a great example of how I sometimes just have to spend a session suppling Glitter up. She had a few days off due to thunderstorms and wet ground, and she usually comes back from a mini vacation tense, resistant to the bit, hollow, and sucked back. Boiled down the footage to show how, over the course of a 25 minute session, I first unlock the neck with lots of circles and direction changes, then push forward into the contact and allow her to take the reins and start swinging more. Also featuring a lil’ spook at... chickens? Who knows! 😂
Working through some of the issues that lead to Bold Glitter’s outburst the other day with a balance and contact exercise on the lunge line. Not her favorite, but she figured it out!
