Chapter 8: Good People and Some Happy News

Later on, after the appointment Kate asked Caroline if she minded driving to her parents’ house. Of course Caroline was more than happy to and, after Kate thanked her and they waved goodbye, she trudged up the walkway to the house.

Standing on the steps and staring at the door, Kate let out a sigh before knocking. Within seconds, her mother opened the door.

“Oh, Kate, what a surprise!” Gladys widened the door and gestured for her daughter to walk through. “Come in! I just baked some cookies and put the teakettle on the stove!”

Kate followed her mother into the kitchen and immediately took a seat at the kitchen table.

“How are you, Sweetheart?” She grabbed two mugs from her cupboards and set them on the counter. “You look a little tired… I hope you’re not worrying yourself sick about Don.”

“I’m trying not to,” she forced a smile. “But… well, you know how I’ve been feeling under the weather lately?”

Since I'm working on a million fics right now (thank you ADHD, I need psychological help), I'm gonna post two snippets, one from a coxstroke fic and one from my new WIP: Star Wars byler

It hurt to open your eyes when you were in the ocean. The salt made it hard to keep them open for a long time and it was always difficult to see, no matter what kind of water you were in. That’s what goggles had always been for, to protect your eyes and help you see. Don kept his eyes open and let them burn. Maybe if the salt irritated them long enough, it would burn the image of Shorty’s mutilated corpse from his retinas. Maybe if he drank enough salt water, it would erase the taste of Shorty’s blood. Maybe if he held his breath long enough… no. Don sat up and shivered as the cold night air settled over his skin.

And now for Star Wars byler (someone save me from myself)

“You dream of her.” Will was thrown from his restless meditation at the sound of his master’s voice. He opened his eyes and slowly stood, the stone floor cold against his bare feet. He could feel his master’s disgust as clearly as he felt his own emotions, and he turned to face the open door. “Sometimes.” “What a waste of time.” Lord Vecna’s lips curled into a sneer as he examined Will. Will knew that he was hunting for weaknesses, for anything to use against him. “The dark side allows attachment, yes, but your sister is a traitor to our ways. You would do well to remember that, my young apprentice.” “Yes, my lord.” Will bowed his head in submission as Vecna stepped closer. He didn’t want to think about the day El left, but he couldn’t help it. It was as if the Force wanted him to see her face in his dreams, like she was a reminder of something. Of my weakness.

“Ugh,” Bobby complained as he walked up to the boat, hunching his shoulders and hugging his arms to his body. “It’s freaking freezing this morning.”

Joe studied Bobby, questioningly raising his eyebrows as he noticed the three layers of clothing the coxswain was wearing.

“Warm enough, Moch?” Chuck called from seat 2, a conniving smirk spreading across his face.

All Bobby did was glare at him before he climbed into the stern of the Husky Clipper.

The boys tightened their riggers and tested their slides by scooching their seats back and forth. While Bobby fastened and adjusted his megaphone a cold breeze whipped by, sending a chill down his spine. He shivered.

“It’s so dang cold I’m gonna freeze my balls off.” His tone was grumbly.

“Realistically,” Don started, rolling his eyes. “That’s not gonna happen.”

Bobby only huffed and rolled his eyes.

“Ya know, technically,” Shorty piped in. “They’ll retract back up into your body.” He smirked, clearly proud of himself.

Bobby shot him an angry look.

“No crap, Sherlock.” He shivered again.

“Careful, boys,” Roger warned. “You know Bob gets moody in cold weather.”

“Maybe if you’d pick up an oar and help us row, Moch you wouldn’t be so cold.”

The boys all laughed at Chuck’s joke but Bobby did not find it funny. At all. He calmly took the dowels.

“That’s funny,” his tone oozed sarcasm. “But the only reason I’ll be picking up an oar, will be to smack you with it, Day.”

Chuck rolled his eyes as if to say “As if”.

Don is out of breath, tears sting at his eyes. He can’t change the past, but there’s nothing in the future waiting for him. Wiping at his face, he skates to the edge of the rink, ready to abandon the ice for the night.

Bobby goes to Ulbrickson with some questions while Don and his group venture deeper into the arena
