1971–1973 Buick Riviera
The 1971–1973 Buick Riviera "Boattail" is one of the most distinctive American cars of the early 1970s, known for its bold, sweeping rear design inspired by classic speedboats and streamlined designs of the 1930s. Designed under the direction of Bill Mitchell and shaped by Jerry Hirshberg, the Boattail Riviera stood out with its dramatically tapering fastback rear window and trunk—unlike anything else on the road.
Built on GM’s full-size B-body platform, the Boattail Riviera came standard with a 455 cubic inch (7.5L) V8, delivering massive torque and effortless cruising power. Interior appointments were luxurious, in keeping with Buick’s premium image, with deep, cushioned seating and available wood trim. The 1971 model had bold, protruding fenders and minimal chrome, while the 1972 and 1973 versions were slightly toned down in response to market tastes and federal regulations, including new bumpers.
Though polarizing at the time and not a huge commercial success, the Boattail Riviera has become a cult classic. Collectors now admire it for its daring design and confident departure from the ordinary. Today, it stands as a bold expression of American automotive creativity—a true fusion of art and muscle.

Throwback Thursday 🇺🇸🏍️😎. The Harley Davidson showrooms of the 1970s were packed full of classic rides 👍🏻. Especially my favorite the 1971 SuperGlide Boattail. It was Harley’s first factory custom. A one year only design that was shunned by its customers
