Go'ō Shrine 護王神社 (Kyoto)
Rushing to the Aid of the Enshrined Kami in Times of Crisis
"In ancient Japan, boars that resided in the mountains were considered one of the wild game animals, alongside deer, and were viewed as precious blessings from the kami. Since then, the wild boar has become viewed as the kami of mountains itself, or as the mount of said kami.
At Go'ō Shrine which enshrines Wake no Kiyomaro-kō, a court noble who flourished during the Nara and Heian eras, boars are considered messengers of the kami. This is said to originate in a legend from the Nara era when Kiyomaro-kō thwarted the monk's Dōkyō attempts to usurp the throne, and was banished to Ōsumi no Kuni 大隅国 (modern day Kagoshima Prefecture). 300 wild boars suddenly appeared during the journey, protecting him and his injured legs, and guided him to Usa Hachimangū (Ōita)."

Koma-Inoshishi Also Has the A-Um Shape
"Similarly to the Komainu, the Koma-inoshishi also appear with open and closed mouths. Facing the statues, the right side has the open mouth (Agyō - A), and the left side has the closed mouth (Ungyō - Um)."
Carrying the Wishes of the People of Kyoto
"When the main worship space of Go'ō Shrine was completed in 1886, there were neither komainu nor koma-inoshishi. The people of Kyoto, unable to allow this to pass, raised their voices to have a statues of boars made, as they were associated with the Gosaijin; in 1890 they were completed thanks to donations."

"Designed in 1998, alongside the bronze statue of the gosaijin Wake no Kiyomaro-kō. Previously it had been a bamboo pipe, but the shrine took initiative in turning it into an engimono linked to the gosaijin."
Blessed with the Power of Boars
"It is said if you rub the boar's nose, you will be blessed with luck and happiness."
Praying to the Boars
"On the left side of the sacred tree in front of the main hall, is a stone carving of the silhouette of a wild boar. It is said if you place a skewer in front of this boar, then your wish will come true. This is a special belief of Go'ō Shrine."
