The setting is modern-day Alaska. Rey, searching for her birth parents, has gone to the last place there’s any record of them, the middle of nowhere, in the dead of winter. Everyone sees her as strong, intelligent, and self-sufficient, and she is - but she’s also tired of being alone and tired of a lack of answers and closure.

After poor planning leads her to collapse in an icy cave, she is saved by a quiet young man named Ben, who has retreated to the far north for reasons he won’t disclose to her. But when he looks at her, this beacon of determination who refuses to lay down and take the bad hand life has dealt her, he can’t help it. His broody loner tendencies give way to a kinder impulse. He brings her home to his grandfather’s house, which he inherited, where she can recover.
