The great 17 victory ace Leutnant Max Immelmann and friend. He was the first pilot to be awarded the Pour le Mérite, which was forever more known as the Blue Max. Germany's first superstar pilot, Max's death (KIA 18 June 1916) five months after being awarded the Blue Max, plunged the country into mourning. Sanke postcard #362
Harvested the blue max today. This is the daughter of the mysterious blue pumpkin that grew on @sireenica 's fence last year. It grew on my fence this year! Then it died dramatically of, I suspect, bacterial wilt. That is why it is so puny and stressed looking.
@pumpkin-patch and I tried hard to ID it last year to no avail. Any thoughts now?
Here she was last week before the vine died

Excellent Sanke postcard of victory ace and Pour le Mérite (Blue Max) holder Lothar von Richthofen, younger brother of 80 victory ace and WW1 Ace of Aces Manfred von Richthofen, aka The Red Baron. His Blue Max sits under his throat. A tremendous pilot, he scored 33 of his 40 victories in just three months. For more, see my Facebook group - Eagles Of The Reich
19 victory ace (possibly 22) and Pour le Mérite holder Leutnant Kurt Wintgens. Flying a Fokker M.5K/MG (E.5/15) prototype Eindecker on 1 July 1915, he became the first person to shoot down an aircraft using a synchronised machine gun. Wintgens would be KIA on 25.9.1916 and was the third pilot to be awarded the Blue Max after 15 victory ace Max Immelmann and 40 victory ace, the great Oswald Boelcke.
