Fate and Gravity aren't easy to escape.
Zer0 ran, propelling himself across the rooftops of Sanctuary, the breeze caused by his passing tearing his hair loose from its ponytail and making it stream behind him. His face was bare, the trademark helmet he’d worn for years to obscure his face, to protect himself from those who would want to get their hands on the technology that made up more then half of him, his security blanket having been set aside for sometime now. He didn’t need it when he wasn’t on a mission, there was no one left to fear when he had Her to stand beside him.
The soft tapping of footsteps behind him alerted the once assassin to her approach and he smirked slightly, slowing just enough he was almost within arm’s reach. Closer, closer, and there! He launched across a gap, pushed off a wall to change direction, grinning wide at the soft curse as she followed as his heels. He was the lead in their game today and it wasn’t often anymore that he could pull one over on her. She was too used to reading him, too good at knowing his intentions from every tiny shift. And she could keep up with him too.
Good thing he knew her just as well.
They continued their game, running tag across the roofs of a flying city, stories above the street and miles above the ground. It soon devolved into simply free running for the pleasure of it, the wind in their hair, hearts beating, adrenaline surging, every step, breath, and unnecessary acrobatic matched by the other. Harmony neither could find anywhere but at each other’s side.
So focused are they on each other, their route long since memorized, they dont notice that their regular passage has loosened several of the shingles covering the next roof. Zer0 takes a step, sure of his footing, only for the tiles to slide out from under his foot, taking his balance and then himself with them. The startled yelp isn’t needed to get her attention as she’s already reaching for him but the shingles under her give way too, drawing another startled cry as they now both plummet toward the street.
Less trained people may have landed on their faces but they’re better then that, Maya rolling and Zer0 landing straight in a crouch beside her with metal limbs taking the shock. There’s a moment of startled comprehension before the other shingles follow the first group down and proceed to rain about an on top of the pair’s heads. Zer0 is quick to reach over and shield Maya’s head with a metal arm, not so quick to shield himself. The tiles clatter and crash as they bounce off the metal encasing half of his head and forming his arm and a moment later it’s all over. They just blink at each other for several beats, sitting on the old concrete of the street, covered in bits of roof shingles and dust that was still drifting down.
Then they burst out laughing, near collapsing onto the rubble-strewn concrete. A few of the civilians who’d seen them fall shake their heads or roll their eyes at the behavior of the Vault Hunters, Heroes of Pandora. Most of them were used to the two’s antics by now though and simply continued on. Maya reached out, brushing dust from Zer0′s dark hair and smudging away the small trickle of blood from where the corner of a tile had caught him on the brow. A quick bit of glow had him as good as new and he smiled at the familiar feeling.
“You okay? You know I can take a hit, right?” She asked, grey eyes still dancing with laughter. He only grinned and returned the favor of brushing her off.
“You’ve taken just as many bullets as I have, doesn’t mean I can’t protect you from a vicious shower of shingles.” She scoffed at him, lightly punching him in the ribs where he could feel it. No use punching his metal arm, all that would do was hurt her hand.
“I’m blaming you for this, just so you know. This is all your fault,” she chided as she got up, dusted herself off, and held out a hand to pull him to his feet as well. Now upright, they both looked over the mess with small frowns. “That’s Axton’s place,” she said and he nodded, a hint of a mischievous smirk tugging his mouth and crinkling the corner of his organic eye.
“Yup.”
“He’s going to be mad,” she turned toward him, one elegant blue eyebrow raised.
“Uh huh.” He fought the smirk but, even after so long his poker face was terrible.
“Zer0!” She punched him again, tone amused but chiding. “He’ll make us fix it for him!” Zer0 shrugged and tucked his hands behind his head, an air of complete nonchalance about him now as he began to walk off.
“He has to track us down first. Don’t think he’ll find an ex-assassin and the Siren Goddess who’s just as good at disappearing.” Maya rolled her eyes at his back but strode to keep up with him.
“You’re awfully childish for a Vault Hunter and one of the Heroes of Pandora, don’t you think?”
“Please,” he snorted. “If anything all the shit we’ve put up with on this planet gives us the right to be childish.” Suddenly a shout rang out behind them, their blonde commando teammate having rounded the corner to see the pile of debris that was formerly part of his roof. Zer0 and Maya glanced back, looked at each other, and grinned.
“Salvador did it!” Zer0 shouted back at him as Maya grabbed his hand with a laugh, tugging him after her at a run when Axton made a wordless noise of exasperated anger and gave chase, the pile of broken shingles left behind on the cracked street for some other sorry soul to deal with.
There's an irritable blue haired woman in a skintight yellow suit and jeans, blue tattoos down her left arm, stomping through the sand with murder on her face.
"Alright, where the fuck is my assassin and what the fuck are you all doing with them?"
Somewhere in town, Zer0 sneezes and freezes. Oh dear, they're in trouble now.
