I don't hate blind box bjds, but I wish blind box bjd collectors have a seperate community from the main bjd community. It's not because blind boxes are cheaper, they look very different from resin scale bjds. Like does your average blind box bjd look like a fairyland doll, or even a resinsoul doll? The closet doll brand most blind box bjds resemble are azones, and those aren't bjds at all.

I think westerners' with rather harsh attitude toward blind box bjd aren't aware that most of them are from indie studios and artists and were made by crowdfunding with inputs and feedbacks from customers during the process. Big brands like Penny's Box and Come4Free exist but it doesn't change the fact that the majority of them are small, newly established brands, a lot of them couldn't even complete their bjd project because of the lack of funding. Also, for smaller brands, the dolls will be made in smaller batches and often will be discontinued after a year or so.
The blind box format, beside being popular in Asia, is also used to ensured that all dolls will be sold equally and you often can buy confirmed box of the dolls you want by buying in group orders or from retailers or the secondhand market. People only buy blind boxes when they don't mind getting any of the designs and even if they ended up with a design they didn't like, they will either sell or trade it or customize it. I've also seen a lot of westerners assuming that people buying blind box dolls won't be customizing them but that is not true at all, most people will custom or restyle the dolls they bought, in fact I rarely seen anyone keeping the dolls in their original styles. Brands also very much encourage their buyers to customize their dolls by giving spare parts as preorder freebies or selling them if you missed the preorder period, sometimes they even release 3d print files of their doll parts for free.
Just because the dolls are more affordable and sold in a format you don't like or not familiar with how it works doesn't mean they are "landfills" or "slop". I actually haven't seen anyone in the Asian bjd/doll community hating on blind box bjd for not being "real bjd" at all and was very surprised to learned that a lot of westerners hate them for being cheaper alternatives.

Idk anything about bjd and I bought a blind bag doll second hand, I’m pretty sure it’s not a recast like 99.9% but I plan on taking him apart and sculpting his own clay hair piece and making new clothes for him from scratch? I like blindbox bjds because they're already "complete" right out of the box and for the price, they are sturdy enough. I see them and treat them like Nendoroids. I do think that the whole blindbox aspect can be predatory especially for people who may have addiction and gambling problems, who suffers from FOMO easily, or are very impulsive. For me they are a boon, as they are a cheaper option for my son who is also interested in dolls and likes to play with them to bond with me. We don't buy an entire series, usually we just get him his most favorite in a series.
He currently has four blindbox bjds right now and to be honest, he's quite happy with them and isn't really asking for more (so far). They're perfect cute little companions for him, and I get to teach him how to take care of his things using a cheaper alternative (because he inevitably is going to be rough with them and may damage them, he just turned five). If he's still into dolls when he's older, I'm getting him a non-blind box bjd. For now he's happy with his little babies, and I'm happy also because they don't cost me an arm and a leg.

I don't think blind box bjds are bad, I actually think they're really cool. But I do think they belong in a different category than regular bjd. Other than both being strung dolls with ball joints, they don't have a lot of similarities and seem to serve fundamentally different purposes
One is about customization, artistry, personal creativity, supporting a small business, and taking the time to save and choose what you really enjoy. The other is about getting a fully designed doll, which is far more similar to fashion doll or blind box plushie collecting than to BJD's. (Yes there are BJD fullsets, but the majority of BJD collectors prefer to design it themselves).
Both are good and cool things to collect. But I really do think they belong in different spaces. I wouldn't even really say most blind box BJD's are good starter BJD's/to see if you like the hobby because getting a fully designed little doll is much different than the more typical experience in the BJD hobby, which is getting a blank bigger one that takes a long time to complete. The way the joints move and work is also going to be really different. Handling a blind box BJD is leagues away from the way it feels to handle an MSD or SD. Just some thoughts.
