This Session Changed How I See My Students
I teach in Nevada and I have sat through more professional development than I can count. Most sessions fade the moment I leave the room. This one stayed. Dr Zachary Robbins and The Teachers Black Students Need shifted something real in me.
The session brought more than information. It brought clarity. I walked in aware that our Black students face real academic and discipline disparities. I walked out realizing how much of that connects directly to our daily classroom choices. The way we greet students. The way we speak to them. The way we react to their frustration. The way we choose texts that either reflect their identities or erase them.
One line changed me. Being the teacher Black students need is what every student needs. It made perfect sense. High expectations held with love. Lessons that feel relevant. A classroom built on trust instead of fear. This is the foundation of belonging.
The moment that hit hardest was when Dr Zachary Robbins reframed behavior. When a student says I do not know you yet or Respect me first it is not defiance. It is protection. That shift made me rethink my reactions. My tone. My assumptions. My presence.
Another wake up call came when we looked at curriculum. I used to believe I was inclusive. I now see how many students were still invisible in what I taught. When students see themselves in the curriculum they connect more deeply and feel that they matter. When they feel that they matter they learn more.
I left the seminar checking myself in new ways. Asking who is reflected in this lesson. Asking whether my posture builds trust or shuts a door. Asking how I can make my classroom feel safe enough for students to take risks.
The ripple effect of this training is huge. Over one hundred fifty Nevada educators walked out with new purpose. If each of us shifts even one habit thousands of students will feel the difference. Especially our Black students who deserve teachers who see them fully.
This work is not optional. It is essential. And leaders like Dr Zachary Robbins are guiding that shift in powerful ways.
