I'm preparing for this for the Show on Monday. So, let's Play Q&A with a PWA (Person with Albinism)! Some of you have known for a long time that I have #albinism (surprisingly new to others). I DO NOT like the word albino or phrase "he's an albino." It may be unintentional, but for years (for some of us) it has been offensive. Because of #InternationalAlbinismAwarenessDay, which is on Monday, June 13th, let's play "Ask a PWA!" (Person with Albinism). You can ask me anything about albinism or about living with the condition, and I will answer in order to educate and advocate about my rare genetic disorder. Let’s keep those questions G-rated! I'll answer them below and on air. To kick off, here are a few fun facts. *Albinism occurs in all races of people and in all parts of the world. *There are about 7 types of albinism that have been identified and more are coming. The differences in the types have to do with which genes are affected and where in the gene sequence the disorder occurs. *Although the most well-known type of albinism is the “bright white” kind that I have - oculocutaneous (pronounced ock-you-low-kew-TAIN-ee-us) which means it affects the eyes, skin and hair, there are other types that do have some pigment. Ocular albinism only affects the eyes. It is a sex-linked disorder so it most commonly occurs in males – similar to color blindness. Unfortunately, some people get this mixed up – they think that albinism affects their eyes, so they must have ocular albinism, even though it’s obvious that their hair and skin is also affected. *The occurrence of all types of albinism in the U.S. is about 1 in 17,000. (See, I really am rare!) Wow, you’ve read a long ways to get to this point, so….Now, it’s your turn! Ask some G-rated questions!
