Wow. 3.5/5! I gotta say I liked this one more than I thought I would. It was kinda reversed lol I thought I would like Shattered Silk more and this one less. But I liked Shattered Silk rather less than I expected and this one more than expected. Funny how that works out.
I'm leery of things having to do with patriotism, as it too often gets twisted into something more sinister, such as nationalism although it patriotism itself is genuinely a lovely concept. Pride in one's country and the desire to make it better, worthy of pride, to stop the evils within and all that. It's a intriguing, slow paced book and I did learn new things about the American Revolution, and I always love learning new things. It's very staunchly abolitionist (the most applicable term as it's set partially in the 1700s) and feminist in its themes. As for the love interest-He's so weird I like him a lot as a character, and Jan loves him too, it's sweet. The mystery was fun and each timeline was necessary, and the way they entwine together is well done. Usually dream heavy books are quite bad with having the dream actually matter/have consequences BUT that's not the case here.
3.25/5 I loved the mystery and learning about vintage clothes. However I do not really care for Mark XD I usually actually enjoy how Barbara Michaels writes her romances but this one did not strike my fancy. It could be because he's a senator (an unfair bias, I know but people in power, real or fictional rightly have their integrity under scrutiny) and while I didn't think he was dishonest or anything, and Barbara Michaels did try to illustrate him as a good guy - I also did not get a sense he really cared about people (re: his constituents, Karen and Cheryl, Tony ect). He wasn't very charming or fun, nor was he that smart imo. He wasn't bad! But he was just there.
4/5! This was very tense and atmospheric as well as slow and steadily/well paced. Reading it was a great experience. Megan herself is not very interesting (except for how calculating she is) but she's a very good foil for Jane, who is the Best character in the book. Barbara Michaels did very well ratcheting up the tension the whole way through. It's an interesting gothic novel where it's not necessarily the setting but the personal dynamics between characters that make it so. Of course those are key to any gothic but the setting was illustrated by the dynamics. In some gothic novels the dynamics are illustrated by the setting.
