The 2023 Challenger Black Ghost is named after a real car, and the real car is better than the tribute.

In the early 1970s a black Challenger R/T with a gator-skin vinyl roof kept turning up at Woodward Avenue street races in Detroit. It would win and then vanish. Nobody could work out who owned it or where it went.

It belonged to Godfrey Qualls, a Detroit police officer. He raced it, he won, and he left before anyone could ask questions. The car went into the National Historic Vehicle Register in 2020.

Dodge built 300 of the tribute version on the Hellcat Redeye Widebody, 807 horsepower, pitch black, gator skin roof, white deck lid stripe.
