Tai’s new hyperfixation
Hey, y’all, so I have a new hyperfixation and that is rollerblading. For anyone curious, I will explain how this came to be.
This starts with another hyperfixation of mine which is the amazingly talented Durand Bernarr. While listening to his music and watching interviews I saw that he was going on tour to different roller rinks. The closest location to me is Chicago. So what did I do? Buy a ticket of course! Then a thought occurred to me I haven’t skated in over 10 years I don’t want to get there and winded easily so I decide let me find my old skates and practice!
I have rollerblades, not roller skates but I’m working with what I got because practice is practice!
So I’ve been skating every day after work for an hour and I’ve been having fun! So now I’m looking up videos on how to skate properly and if my skates are good or do I need better ones. I have decided I want to keep skating after the event (which is Aug 1st)
It’s been a really nice experience, every day this week I’ve been going to the park near me and skating. People are starting to recognize me and talk to me it feels very pleasant. Today was my 4th day so let me tell you how that went.
Today I skated from my house to the park (out of breath when I get there but I made it!) I get it the trail and start doing what I’ve been doing which is skating a little ways up the trail and turning around. Today though I saw another skater and she is amazing going fast and skating the whole trail without taking a break. So that inspires me to go further. I make it halfway around the trail before I get tired and sit at a conveniently placed bench.
I watch her go around a couple of times and then she sits next to me and we talk about how fun skating is. She gets up and continues the trail and I decide I got this far I should finish it too! I get to the end of the trail and see a small slope and realize I haven’t practiced going down a slope, try to slow down and trip over the end of the trail and fall.
My first thought is I broke my leg how am I gonna skate in Chicago! Then I realized I could move it and bend it so it’s not broken. An elderly couple comes up to me and checks on me and says they are glad I’m ok. Still, too nervous to stand I just sit there awkwardly for a bit and the rollerblading girl comes up to me and asks did I wipeout. I told her yea and she helped me up. I’m more confident that I’m ok cuz I can now stand and I’m even able to skate a little. The rollerblading girl encourages me to keep going and goes slowly around the trail with me.
She tells me how she goes down slopes and says I’m doing pretty good for just starting back up. I end up sitting down because my leg is starting to hurt more. I start taking off my skate and she says that she hopes to see me around again one day and for me to not give up.
After all of that while my leg hurts and is swollen I don’t feel discouraged and I don't want to give up. In fact, I started looking up how to fall when skating and how to go down slopes. Also, I looked better skates. I say this last part because I usually give up pretty easily when I get hurt, or scared.
I think because of all the positivity I’ve been getting these past couple of days, especially today it has motivated me to keep going. So I’ve decided ima let myself heal for a couple of days and get back to it. I’ll be skating with Durand and beyond!
Wow, I didn’t realize how long this was. If you read all of this thank you you’re awesome! If not here is the TLDR:
Durand Bernarr got me back into skating. I’ve been skating every day this week. I fell for the first time today. People checked on me and encouraged me to keep going. I’m going to heal and keep going!
