Apple has delisted the Bitchat messaging service from China’s App Store on orders from authorities, Block Inc. CEO Jack Dorsey revealed on Sunday.

Dorsey launched Bitchat, a Bluetooth-based messaging app that requires no internet, last year.

According to the white paper, Bitchat provides “ephemeral messaging,” meaning that messages are stored only in the device's memory and not on any central database. The system operates within a 30-meter Bluetooth range, using bridge nodes to link separate clusters.

Billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman pitched the app as a useful communication tool in censored environments, such as those in Iran during the anti-regime protests earlier this year.

Offline Mesh: Uses Bluetooth to send messages directly from phone to phone. Messages "hop" across nearby devices to extend range.

Nostr Integration: Uses the Nostr protocol as a fallback for global messaging when internet is available.

No Identity: No phone numbers or emails required; users are anonymous by default.

Resilience: Built for communication during internet blackouts, protests, or natural disasters.

Bluetooth mesh communication apps could be vital if the internet and cellular networks go down after an earthquake or typhoon.Mesh communications apps connect phones to phones, so if there's a message you want to send to somebody who's on the other side of town, that message will hop from one phone to another until it reaches its destination. It may take a while for your message to arrive, but if enough phones use the mesh app, it will eventually get there.

There are several mesh communications apps, but the one I've settled on is BitChat because it's available for Android and iOS and was developed by Jack Dorsey, who created Twitter, so he knows about communications.

BitChat messages are end-to-end encrypted.
