In the aftermath of a losing battle, a wounded knight takes refuge in a cave. He makes an unexpected acquaintance that will change his story forever.

Excerpt:

"If you've come to kill me," Scoot said tiredly, "then I ask you make it quick. I'm in no mood to wait around."

The hulking shadow at the mouth of the cave paused and then it laughed. A low rumbling sound that raised the hair on the back of Scott's neck.

"No more death," a voice said, deep and dark. The accent was thick and strange. Not that of the enemy. The enemy spoke Scott's language and wore a similar face. A neighboring nation with greed in their hearts and blood rising in them like a tide.

A mercenary then. A sellsword.

"Ever?" Scott asked. "That'd be nice."

The shadow moved closer, the outline blurring into the dark of the cave. A thin metallic sound, a scrapping over the rock made Scott's hackles rise. A weapon of some sort. But what could he do? If it came to a fight, he would do his best to defend himself, but he knew he was weak. Prone.
