The bright, yellow brick Second Empire mansion at 325 South Old Woodward Avenue historic was built in 1878 for businessman Frank Ford. It was designed by noted Detroit architect Almon Clother (A. C.) Varney. The home was later owned by Ford’s daughter, Alta, and husband J. Bert Peabody. From 1918 to 1968, the property was home to Birmingham Masonic Lodge No. 44., which added a rear addition. In 1968, the historic home was purchased by Jack Milan, who wanted to demolish it for, you guessed it, a parking lot. Fortunately, several city commissioners and historical board members intervened and convinced Milan to convert the home for commercial use. In 1977, the Ford-Peabody residence was declared historic and has since undergone several major restorations and expansions. 440 Lake Park Drive in Birmingham was designed by noted local architect, Wallace Frost. Frost (1892-1962), a native of Uniontown, Pennsylvania, studied under Paul Philippe Cret while at the University of Pennsylvania. He met Albert Kahn while designing hangars for the Naval Air Force base in Washington, D. C. Kahn asked Frost to join his firm in Detroit after the WWI. Frost settled in B'ham in 1921. He started his own firm in 1926. 440 LPD (1930) is one of more than 40 Frost designs in Birmingham. He also designed homes in Detroit's Indian Village and Palmer Woods districts as well as the Grosse Pointes. It is an example of an English country home.
