Research shows that outdoor cats kill an estimated 2.4 billion birds and 12.3 billion small mammals in the U.S. alone each year! 😱 This isn't just a statistic—it’s a real threat to biodiversity.

Here are a few species that are particularly at risk:

Eastern Meadowlark: A beautiful songbird that's rapidly declining in numbers.

Piping Plover: A small shorebird now listed as threatened due to habitat loss and predation.

New England Cottontail: A rabbit species struggling to survive amidst shrinking habitats and increased predation.

Island Foxes: Some populations have faced near extinction, partly due to predation by feral cats.

Hellbenders: These giant salamanders are already rare, and their populations are being further impacted by invasive species, including cats.

I have six pet birds and they all seem to like a few different genres of music so I was really curious to see if anyone’s ever done a study on bird’s music preferences to see what they like the most. I’ve found a few sources saying that a lot of birds seem to like pop and classical music, also maybe country? Heard Folk music a few times too, but it all depends on the bird. My birds seem to like when I play them bands like Waterparks. They get so excited. I’ll have to pull up some classical music tomorrow and see if they’re interested in that genre as well. I’m also wondering if the species of bird, and the sounds they naturally make, also effect the music they prefer considering the huge amount of different sounds and calls birds have. The Ringneck doves I had in the past preferred the Christian music station. My current birds, two budgies and four canaries, see to prefer pop music. My friend’s green cheek conure really likes music containing the banjo or similar stringed instruments. I’ve also seen a lot of parrots online who get excited when bands like Slipknot or Korn come on. As a huge music fan and crazy bird nerd, this topic is super interesting to me. If you have a pet bird or know someone with a pet bird, what species of bird are they and what are their favorite music genres? How does your bird respond to the music? Do they dance? Do they start singing or chirping? (My budgies chirp and my canaries sing when I play them certain music.) I’d love to know! 🐤
