Topical Day | World Migratory Bird Day
Every year, billions of birds cross continents, connecting ecosystems that sustain life across regions.
As they move, they do more than migrate. They control pests, disperse seeds, and support wetlands that millions depend on.
But these journeys are changing. And understanding how they are changing depends on something simple: observation.
This year’s theme, “Every Bird Counts – Your Observations Matter,” highlights how individual sightings help build the data needed to protect migratory birds and their habitats.

In Guwahati, climate change isn’t a distant story. It’s already here.
And a new generation is choosing to understand it. Across 15 schools, 445 students are engaging with water, climate, and their environment through the Pani Pahar curriculum, rooted in the realities of their own city. From the Brahmaputra and Bharalu rivers to Guwahati’s growing water challenges, learning begins close to home. From mapping wetlands to forensic science workshops, young people are observing, questioning, and connecting what they learn to the world around them.

At the southern edge of India lies one of the country’s richest ecological treasures, home to ancient forests, endangered leatherback turtles, coral reefs, and the indigenous Shompen community, Great Nicobar Island is now at the centre of one of India’s biggest development debates.
A ₹81,000 crore mega project promises ports, connectivity, and strategic growth. But it also raises urgent questions about biodiversity, indigenous rights, and the future of fragile ecosystems. Does development always have to come at the cost of nature? Maybe not.
Around the world, countries are finding ways to balance infrastructure with conservation through science-backed planning, wildlife protection, and community-led decision making. And perhaps this is India’s opportunity to show that economic ambition and ecological responsibility can move forward together.
Because the real challenge is not choosing between progress and the planet. It is learning how to build without destroying what makes a place irreplaceable.
