genuinely i think billy summers is one of stephen kings finest literary novels of all time, definitely this side of his van isekai-ing. its very exciting but its also very much character oriented. which a lot of his work is, he's very internal in his scope. but its about literature and war and psychological manipulation and our relationships with others and its about writing and memory and legacy and what to do with yourself when its all so heavy and nobody wins. its thrilling. its so much fun and genuinely my favorite book of his and i would highly recommend it for fans of thrillers as well as the aforementioned themes

ive been putting off buying any new books bc i have so little space (been utilizing my local library p much since i was homeless) but billy summers has been an annual re-read since the first time i read it. i LOVE that book
and now i have that book literally bc the world was like HERE YOU GO

His Trump novel? Or at least his most overtly politically frustrated novel. A lot of crossovers with Bill Hader's Barry, and as enjoyable. King can't help making his characters writers and dropping in references to literature, which I don't mind. It's akin to hearing musical influences in your favourite band.

Η αμφιβολία ειναι πάντα παρούσα και αυτη που φέρνει το σασπένς. Αμφιβολία για τα πάντα. Αν κάνεις το σωστό, αν επιλέγεις το κατάλληλο, αν οι πράξεις σου θα σε ωφελησουν. Οι μόνοι χαρακτήρες που εχουν αξιοθαύμαστη σταθερότητα ειναι οι κακοί της υπόθεσης μια και πατάνε σε πιο στερεη βάση: του μίσους τους, του τραύματος τους, του εγγενούς σαδισμού τους, του κτηνωδους ενστίκτου τους.
Στις λεπτομερώς τοποθετημενες σκηνές του βιβλίου, ο King χαράσσει βαθιες κάθετες τομές ώσπου να αγγίξει υποδόρια τους ήρωες σχετικά με την ολότητά τους- φέρνει στην επιφάνεια τις αιτίες που γεννούν την προσωπικη κόλαση που φέρει ο άνθρωπος, ρίχνει φως σε πτυχές άφατης καλοσύνης που μπορεί να κρύβεται στους πιο σκοτεινούς πόρους των ηρώων.
Ακολουθεί ενοχλητικά κοντά, μα αόρατα τα βήματά τους ως τη αναπαντεχη λύτρωση ή τον ολοκληρωτικό χαμό.
Στο συγκεκριμένο, ο ήρωας ένας πρώην άριστος ελεύθερος σκοπευτής, εκπαιδευμενος φονιάς με άδεια δλδ, αναλαμβάνει μια τελευταία δουλειά. Ως την ημέρα της παράδοσης- της εκτέλεσης δλδ, αρχίζει να κάνει κατι που ήθελε πάντα: να γραφει. Για όλα: την παιδική του ηλικία, τον στρατό, τον πόλεμο, την επιστροφή στην πατρίδα. Ξέρει πως ειναι - άλλη μια φορά- μια μαριονέτα- ενα εργαλείο στις διαταγές άλλων..
Ταυτόχρονα, γράφοντας, ανακαλυπτει πόσο του αρεσει να γράφει, ποσο θα ηθελε νσ κανει αυτό.
ΚΙ αυτη τη φορά, δεν είναι σίγουρος για την επιτυχία της αποστολής, για πρώτη φορά νιωθει πως κατι θα πάει στραβά...πάνω σε αυτο το μεταίχμιο, γνωρίζει μια γυναίκα που πάνω της θα στηριχθεί..
