My story isnât like many, Iâm Billy blacks daughterâŠ..well Iâm his adopted daughter but her never treated me as such, he always made me feel just like any of his other children, maybe even had a bit of a soft spot for me, Jacob was practically the best brother ever to me, we are the same age so he always took me around to hang out with his friends, whether it be just hanging out or at bonfires
Thatâs how I met Seth when we were little, it was a big rez bonfire and Billy and sue were chatting and Seth was peeking out from behind her legs and I was peeking behind Billyâs wheelchair, I giggled when our eyes met and the rest of the night we ran around playing together
Ever since then weâve been inseparable, everyone accepted me as part of the family, it all started when Billy and Charlie were watching a game and having a barbecue
It was a fall evening and while they were inside munching on ribs and preoccupied by the game, a rapid knock came from the door of the Balcks house
Billy went to open the door thinking it could be anyone just to stop by to join them but instead heâs meet with a woven basket at the doorstep with a little baby girl swaddled in a white blanket, her soft babbling immediately clenched at Billyâs heart and he knew he would be the one to raise her as his own
That brings me to now, me and Jake had our friend group and Bella Swan moved back so he was head over heels to make an excuse to see her whenever he could
Tonight we were having a big supper out at the Clearwaters and I was beyond excited, I never knew if it was because I was thrilled to be with my best friend or that maybe there was another underlining reason why only Seth could make my heart feel so calm yet excited at the same time
I brush it to the side as I pull on my camo hoodie and a pair of black leggings, I hear Jake honk the horn of the truck wanting me to hurry up, I quickly spray the vanilla perfume that Seth had gotten me for my birthday, pulling on my dark brown uggs and running out of the house to my awaiting father and brother
âWell donât you look awfully pretty for just a tribe supperâ dad said nudging my arm
âWhat? No iâŠ.i just wanted to look nice is allâ I said as Jake pulled out of the drive way and we made our way to the Clearwaters
Some kind of ghost by black rebel motorcycle club played gently over the radio as we fell into a comfortable silence
Pulling up to Sethâs the place was already humming with joy and a semblance of family, hopping out I jog over to Seth where heâs sat on a log around the fire
I hold my hands over his eyes from behind and I notice Leah smirking from across the fire where sheâs sat with Sue and Harry
âHmmm Iâm smelling vanilla so it must be my pretty best friendâ I giggle as my heart leapt and I sat next to him and hes quick to pick me up and sit me in his lap
Heâs had a major growth spurt recently, making him a bit more muscular and a lot taller, but Iâm not complaining because now I could perfectly curl up against his chest as we watched the fire together
âI missed youâ he sighs as he runs his warm hand up and down my arm
âAwe youâre so cute Sethâ Embry teases as he sits next to us with a burger in his hand
âShut it Embry, let them live in their little bubbleâ Leah says and Harry and Sue chuckle, I look up at Seth and heâs a blushing mess, sure he was my best friend and this big buff guy but he was always so easy to fluster
âCome on Iâm hungry, letâs get some food and away from these jackalsâ he takes my hand and we walk over to the tables covered in varying food but as we moved around the table picking up food I could still feel his warmth enveloping me and it felt like home
But thatâs how best friends feelâŠ..right?
âYouâve been awfully quiet after Embry teased usâ Seth says as the party was dying down more as more of the older people start to leave one by one
âJustâŠ.im just tiredâ I make an excuse because I canât make sense of these feelings and thoughts I feel towards him, heâs my best friend but every time I see him this feeling in my chest just gets stronger and stronger
âYou can stay with me tonight! We can have a sleepoverâ he perks up at the thought, weâve had millions of sleepovers and he was always thrilled every chance he got to have me stay the night
âYeah Iâd like thatâ he takes my hand and we walk over to where our parents are sat chatting
âDad Iâm gonna stay with Seth tonight if thatâs okayâ all three of them give eachother knowing looks
âYeah thatâs fine, but no funny business young ladyâ he says and I almost burst from the seams
âDad! Oh my godâ I cover my face as they laugh and I feel Sethâs hand squeeze mine
âCome on bunnyâ he didnât use the nickname much but when he did it always settled me, he first called me bunny when we were kids, playing out in the mud and a white bunny came running past us, he said it looked like me and from then that was my nickname
He led me inside and straight to his room, it wasnât huge but it was so cozy, his plaid brown comforter, the walls a light brown, a book case cover in random books and decor like dreamcatchers and figurines of wolves, they were always his favorite, he turns on the lamp that excludes a warm hue across the room as I sit on the bed
He rummages through his drawers and pulls out a grey t shirt for me and a pair of plaid pj shorts I always left here for nights like this
âHere you go, Iâll let you change in hereâ as he turns to leave I grab his arm and my knees go weak as I feel his muscles flex
âWaitâŠ..weâve been friends foreverâŠ.you can stayâ for a split second I saw a twinkle in his eye and I had to keep from giggling like a little girl
âReally? Are you sure?â
âYes Seth you can stayâ he awkwardly moves to sit on the bed trying to look anywhere but me as I pulled off my hoodie then my leggings but I could feel his eyes practically burning through me and I canât help but smile
I put on the pjs and crawl onto the bed and heâs as red as a tomato
âSee not a big dealâ I say running my hand down his back and he jumps up from the bed
âMy turn I guessâ he says giddy, he pulls his jacket off, followed by his shirt and he looks like heâs been sculpted by the gods
âWhat? I canât appreciate my best friend?â I joke and he continues to unbuckle his belt letting his jeans hit the floor, he pulls on sweatpants and crawls under the covers next to me
Now laying face to face as we just look at eachother, I run my hand through his hair playing with the ends
âCan I ask you something?â I ask feeling my heart speed up
âIs this how best friends are suppose to feel and act with eachother?â I practically whisper out as I continue to curl his long black hair around my fingers
âI donât knowâŠâŠyouâre the only girl best friend Iâve ever hadâ his hand came up to my hip gently stroking his thumb up and down
âThe others seem to know something we donât, with all the jokes they makeâ his brown eyes soften and I could melt
âMaybe theyâre just jealous of how close we are and the bond we haveâ he adds, the urge in me grows strong to get closer but the door swings open and we jump apart, sitting up seeing Leah and Jake standing there
âSorry to interrupt but Jake wanted to say byeâ Leah smirks, she was always like an older sister to me
âUhhh yeah dad and I are heading out now, night sisâ Jake says awkwardly as he rubs the back of his neck
âUmm okay, drive safe, night Jakeâ I felt like we just got caught but we werenât even doing anything
âNight guysâ Leah smiles as she closes the door and we both let out a sigh and lay back down, I turn my back to him and he pulls me to his chest wrapping his arm around me
âGoodnight bunnyâ he whispers into my hair
âNight Sethâ I felt content in his arms like I was always meant to be here
Itâs been a week since what almost happened between Seth and I, I didnât really think it was that big of a deal, I mean weâve been through everything together but slowly heâs barely been responding to my texts and when I call the house theyâve been saying heâs under the weather and that k shouldnât stop by
And I canât help but thinkâŠ..did I make him uncomfortable, did I ruin everything we had, did I lose my best friend
After another unanswered call I hang up the phone on the wall and sigh
âEverything okay honey?â Dad asks as he rolls into the kitchen
âI donât know, I think I ruined everythingâ
âIâŠâŠme and Seth had a moment I guess, I thought everything was fine but heâs been cutting me out, even Sue and Harry have been saying I shouldnât come by, I canât be without him dad heâs myâŠ..heâs my best friendâ I hang my head feeling torn, I didnât wanna disrespect their wishes to leave it alone, or to see for myself what was going on with the one person I really needed
âLook im sure heâs is just sick, that boy would never mean to hurt you, he looks at you like you hung the moonâ
âNo he doesnât, youâre just saying that so I donât go over thereâ
âIâm serious, just give it some time kid Iâm sure youâll both be back to sleepovers and walks on the beach in no timeâ he pats my arm as he leaves back to the game with Charlie
I tried to brush it off but I had a nagging feeling in the back of my head that I need to go there, I canât even talk to Jake about this, I donât know whatâs gone on with him either, heâs cut his hair and got a tattoo and barely talks to me
I grab my jacket and head out, I took the truck and drove down to the Clearwaters, I never felt nervous pulling up to their place but now I didnât know what was awaiting me, if Iâd even be welcomed
I wring my hands as I walk up to the front door and knock, my heart thrumming as I hear footsteps and the door opens, itâs Sue and her smile fades when she sees itâs me
âY/n whatâre you doing here, we told you heâs sick and we donât want you catching itâ
âIâŠ..did I do something wrong? Heâs been sick before and Iâve always come to see himâ her eyes soften and she sighs
âNo sweetheart itâs just really complicated and we wanted to keep you safeâ
âSafe from what, first Jake does a complete 180 and now my best friend wonât talk to me and itâs killing me, I need him Sueâ I know I sounded completely desperate but this hole in my chest could only ever be filled by Seth
âIâm sorry sweetie, itâs just not a good timeâ
âBut IâŠ..â she closes the door before I can even say another word and that tight feeling in my chest worsens, I hang my head in defeat as I walk back to the truck and drive down to La Push beach, hoping itâll help clear my head and ease the darkness on my heart
The weather is cloudy as usual, on days that would rain Seth would always come get me and weâd play around the beach, writing in the sand, him chasing after me, sometimes even sitting in the tree line when the rain would get heavy and just lean against each other waiting it out
I walk along the sand huffing when I sit against a piece of drift wood, I didnât have many bad memories of this beach because I always had my friends, I had Seth, but now Iâm alone, all my friends have dissapeared, my brothers always gone, the elders are obviously keeping something from me
Maybe they were finally realizing that I didnât fit in, that Billy shouldnât have taken me in
While Iâm deep in my self deprecating thoughts I hear cheerful screams coming from the cliffs, I look up and see people jumping off, theyâre moving so fast I can barely make them out but guessing from the size of the group itâs all my âfriendsâ
Wanting to just talk to them, to just see them I decide to hike up there, itâs a steep walk but Iâm determined to get to the bottom of this, if my thoughts were true
I finally manage to get over the hardest part and back onto flat ground, weaving my way around pine trees I hear faint hushed voices, frantic even
I get closer and closer expecting to see the group there but when I move around the last tree to the edge of the cliff itâs desolate, not a single soul and I feel my heart drop, they left, they saw me coming and purposefully left
I walk quickly to the edge of the cliff thinking maybe they went to the lower ledge but thereâs nobody there either
I fall to my knees and just let the emotions and despair wash over me, why were they treating me like this
âWhat did I do wrongâ I cry as the tears continue to stream down my cold face, the world feels like itâs turning on me and I canât handle it, I fall to the ground in a crumpled heap, curling my legs up to my chest
I felt so cold inside, like something was being torn out of me, Iâve lost friends in the past, from just drifting apart but it never felt like this, god why does it hurt so much
My tears lull me to sleep and I canât even bring myself to care that Iâm in the forest, maybe itâll take all my pain away one way or another
Billy is at the door of the little red house watching for his daughter to come back, he knows where his son is but y/n has been gone all day, itâs the middle of the night now and still no call, nothing
Jake emerges from the trees and walks towards the house exhausted from the day of patrol
âThank god youâre backâ Billy sighs alerting Jake
âYeah, is everything alright?â
âHave you seen your sister?â The memory of having to run away before she saw they at the cliffs plays over in his mind and it kills him a bit to have to do that to her, he knew how much she was struggling with losing everyone to the pack, but he literally couldnât tell her
âLast time I saw her was probably noon out at the cliffâ
âShe hasnât been home all day, she wonât respond to my calls, Iâm worried Jake, sheâs never done this beforeâ
âItâll be okay dad, Iâll get the pack and weâll look for herâ
âPlease bring her homeâ
Jake shifts and howls out as he runs back into the dense forest as the moon shines high above
âJake whatâs going on?â He hears Sam in his head
âY/ns missing, we need to find herâ
âEveryone spread out and look, she could be anywhereâ Sam orders and thereâs a silent agreement through the one stream of consciousness
Something in my chest was guiding me, leading me through the trees and bushes and it felt right to follow it, bringing me right back to the cliffs where we had to leave her
God I missed her so much, having to lie to her was torture, and especially after the moment we had I knew she was thinking this was all her fault, I know how she thinks but with Samâs gag order I had no choice, and Iâd do anything to protect her
I catch her sent on the breeze and itâs even stronger as a wolf, her warm vanilla and pine made me shudder in delight
But when I got to her she was curled up on the cold hard ground, with tear streaks down her pretty cheeks
âI found herâ I say to the others and they all come running from all corners of the forest, giving me time to just admire her
I huff nudging her with my nose, not being able to contain the painful whine that left me, so looked so lost and broken and in the cause
I lay down circling my body completely around her easily, to keep her warm, I breath in her scent as I nuzzle my snout against her neck hoping sheâll wake up, that the elements havenât gotten to her
The others get here and I canât find it in me to leave her or let the others touch her as theyâve all shifted back to humans
âSeth we need to get her home sheâs freezingâ Leah said hoping to convince me, I whine again but let Jake pick her up, we all follow him back to the Blacks house to make sure everything is okay
Sam looks at me, seeing how painful this is for me
âDo you think you have enough control?â He asks and my heart leaps
âYes Sam, please I need to be with herâ he nods his head and Iâm running to the house so fast I thought I might fall, I barge in not caring to knock
âSethâŠâŠitâs good youâre here boy, sheâs been needing youâ Billy says as the three of us watch over her, laid on the couch covered in blankets infront of the fire place
âIâve needed her tooâ
