Meet DIY BIKE CULTURE issue II contributor L. Kling (they/them), organizing member of @greaseragbikes. L is a queer, non binary, mixed race POC biking in occupied Dakota and Anishinaabe territory (Minneapolis). They have been organizing with a rad group of FTW (femme, trans, non binary, agender, two-spirit, women) for 10 years to create Grease Rag, a series of open shops, events, and online safer spaces for FTW on bikes, and more recently they have been organizing FOR US, the BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) FTW sibling of Grease Rag.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ L contributed to our first issue and is much welcomed contributor of issue two. Their piece, "Like a School of Fish: Grease Rag Group Rides", shares how to organize a group ride along with safe space principles and guides. For folks looking towards the future of organizing their own ride or spaces for FTW + BIPOC folks, this is a great resource to start planting seeds into community building and organizing on bikes. You can read the guide in our second issue, available in link in profile.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ L's and Grease Rags work has laid the foundation for many FTW spaces/advocacy work in cycling and also have bike zines on bike camping for ftw, beginner bike camping for bipoc ftw, and knots and rope. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Give them a follow and check out more of their work and resources at https://greaserag.org/.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #cyclistazine #mobilityjustice #bikeequity #socialjustice #bikingdiversity #inequality #bikes #bikesafety #pocoutdoors #bipocsonbikes #takingspaceoutdoors #wtfcycling #zine #bikezines #bikegroupride #diy #bikeculture #diybike #grouprides #guides https://www.instagram.com/p/CAI5bPipF74/?utm_medium=tumblr
Bikes and Traffic Safety
It’s Fall in Iowa. That means harvest and added (and often slower) traffic. Have you spoken to your children about bike and road safety?
Bikes should always be ridden in the same direction as traffic – not against it. Riders should also be old enough to understand and obey the rules of driving and laws of traffic, such as traffic lights, motorist turn signals, crossing guards and four-way stops. Talk to your kids about being aware of what’s happening around them. A simple but effective, “Look both ways” can go a long way.
Student bikers should also be aware of their surroundings – including ag traffic such as sprayers, tractors, combines and slow-moving vehicles. Teaching your kids to keep their eyes on the road as bikers prepares them to become drivers who do the same thing. Iowa roads can change very quickly from mostly empty to congested all in the change of a season or blink of an eye.
It can be difficult for the motorist on a combine pulling a grain wagon to see closely behind their load; inform your children about the importance of staying back and in the drivers’ line of sight. Stress the importance of patience and giving the right of way to a heavy load of machinery that cannot stop on a dime. Remind them not to pass when they cannot see clearly for at least a mile in front of them, and never to pass on a hill.
Communicate with your bikers and set the ground rules for a safe and fun commute to and from school – for kids and farmers alike!
