Getting around to Two Hands, by Big Thief, a band who still feel very much like the best secret that nobody is in on. And I really really want it to stay that way. 

Effortless, how music seems to pour from them and the lead singer lady Adrianne Lenker especially. She might never admit she is the main brains behind the project, given how deferential they come across, but along with charismatic singer/songwriter/guitarist Buck Meek, bassist Max Oleartchik and drummer James Krivchenia they form a tight, propulsive unit, with plenty to say and potential to spare. 

It sounds.. like how the best bands should sound. There is a strict principle behind their recordings: eschewing modern embellishments seems more a conscious decision than a lack of inventiveness - music like this could be taken so many ways, deconstructed and put back together in a computer - but why bother, when the songwriting is so great? This is pure. Don’t fuck with it.   

And the music - dynamic, with deep buried emotion which is allowed to surface, and subsume; contrasts between light/dark, uplifting/sad, masculine/feminine, quiet/loud sometimes all within one song. She seems to struggle at times with her place in the world, a striking half human presence with nowhere to escape but the stage with her trusty guitar, which might be where she is most comfortable anyway. There is a lot of love to be found here, and vulnerability, and she entrusts the audience to accept it. It’s quite something, and must be amazing for them as a band, to see how many people are relating to what they are giving.
