Deep-sea squid Magnapinna.
Magnapinn are inhabitants of great depths, most encounters with them took place at depths from 2000 to 4700 meters. Larvae and juveniles seem to live at shallower depths and sink deeper and deeper as they mature. It is not surprising that scientists still do not have a single adult specimen of magnapinna at their disposal. These are bathyal and Abyssal. Eternal darkness, pressure of hundreds of atmospheres, temperature of about two to four degrees Celsius.
Magnapinna has two kinds of limbs. The first are the usual squid arms, short, muscular, located near the mouth. The second is those legendary tentacle-whips. They can reach a length of 7-8 meters with a mantle length of only 60-80 centimeters. The ratio of tentacles to body length is about 10 to 1. These tentacles are thinner than a pencil, incredibly flexible and carry microscopic suction cups at the ends. They are not muscular like those of a giant squid. They are passive. They're floating. They just hang in the water until the current brings the prey. The most mysterious element is the "elbow joints". Magnapinna's tentacles bend at an almost right angle at one point, creating a distinctive silhouette. Scientists are still debating why.
It turned out that in a calm state, these squids hang upside down in the water column, with the bases of their arms almost horizontally covered with suction cups. Filamentous filaments hang vertically down from their ends. In this position, the squid somewhat resembles a vaga, a special crosspiece for controlling puppets. Often the squid drifts in such a way that the ends of the threads only slightly do not reach the bottom. When moving, the filamentous appendages passively follow the squid, like threads following a child's balloon. The appendages are sticky: sometimes they stuck to the bathyscaphes and it was clear that the squid was tearing them off the surface of the apparatus with great difficulty, while the filaments were noticeably stretched. And in 2020, researchers managed to film the process of folding filaments β it turned out that squids can twist them alternately.
The researchers suggest that these filamentous appendages of the arms are used as a kind of sticky traps to which detritus particles and small crustaceans adhere. When enough food sticks to the thread, the squid twists it, brings it to its mouth and cleans off the prey.
To get magnapinna, you need a deep-sea vehicle worth tens of millions of dollars. There are few such devices in the world. And they are usually engaged in more applied tasks, such as geological exploration and pipeline inspection. Magnapinna gets into the frame by accident, as a side catch of science.
In total, about two dozen visual contacts were recorded. They've never been caught alive. All the samples are dead, raised by trawls. They are poorly preserved because the gelatinous body of deep-sea squid collapses during ascent due to pressure drop.We know less about magnapinn than we do about some dinosaurs.
