We had a great time drawing at Nettelhorst Elementary in Lincoln Park last week! Everyone at the school, and we mean everyone, got to reflect on their favorite Nettelhorst memories. One interesting anthropological observation from the day: drawing is contagious. Once one kid seized on a great idea, it spread to the whole group! We had one round of classrooms with a definite sea creature/Shedd Aquarium theme (by no doing of our own) and one classroom with Halloween imagery galore. Just food for thought. Anyhow, after everyone contributed their piece, the fabulous artwork was put up in the equally fabulous hallway for all to enjoy!
Mapmaker, mapmaker, make me a map!
If you've ever ridden the El or taken the bus anywhere in Chicago, chances are you found yourself looking at some pretty snazzy maps as you tried to figure out how to get from point A to point B. If you've ever wondered how these maps are made or how to make one for yourself, you're in luck! Dennis McClendon, who designed the CTA maps, will be at the Berger Park Fieldhouse THIS Sunday from 2:00-3:30pm to teach you how to draw a map of your own neighborhood, complete with icons for your favorite hangouts. Come learn about what it takes to be a cartographer and think about drawing in a new way!
Bring on the Mischief!
Join us at Mischief Night at the Hyde Park Art Center for some spooky drawing adventures.
From 2:00-5:00pm, we have "Mischief Mask Making" where participants can join in on a collaborative mask-making activity. After meditating on your favorite Halloween memories, themes, and foods, each person will create their own contribution which represents the visceral emotional reactions on All Hallows' Eve. Each person will add their contribution, culminating in one super spooky mask.
In addition, a game of Exquisite Corpse will be happening throughout the galleries all night long. Visitors will create and alter their own monsters and spooky creatures by adding to and peeling away the drawings before theirs, resulting in a revolving display of freakish beasts and Halloween ghouls.
Mischief night will be filled with fun, so make sure you check out the Big Draw Chicago activities as well as the other exciting things happening that evening here.

Join Big Draw Chicago and the Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust at the beautiful Robie House in Hyde Park this Saturday for some very special drawing lesson. The famous architect was an avid collector of Japanese woodblock prints, and so on Saturday, we will be exploring the "Hokusai" method of drawing developed by 19th century Japanese printmaker, Katsushika Hokusai. Participants will have the chance, like many of Wright's apprentices, to explore simple design principles using tracing paper and a Japanese woodblock print. After breaking the image down into simple, geometric shapes, visitors will add their own creative touches for a unique creation all their own.

We had a blast learning about outsider art and creating kooky creatures during our Exquisite Corpse Drawing Social at Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art. We toured the Hawkins/Hawkins exhibit, looking at two approaches to outsider art, and then took that inspiration to create our own art guided by local artists Cathy Hannah and Annie Heckman.
Folding a paper into three parts, we each drew one body part (head, body, or legs) and then passed the folded paper along to the next person to complete. As you can see, the results were fantastic. We might even have to open our own museum for these kooky masterpieces!
We had a great time getting a little messy in our drawing adventures at Garfield Park Conservatory this Saturday with some mud-painting, plant-pounding, and sketching in the exhibits (which was a little less messy but just as fun). We explored the Conservatory's "living collection" for inspiration before going outside to create sketchbooks by pounding plants into burlap fabric, create works of art with natural materials, and painting with mud in the children's garden.
It was so lovely to be out in the beautiful fall weather, with nature as the inspiration for our wonderful (and sometimes muddy) works of art. Thanks Garfield Park Conservatory!
There are few things I love more in this world than art and history--luckily, this Saturday we got a taste of both at the Chicago History Museum. Visitors toured the gallery for inspiration and then added their own drawings to this pop-up sketch gallery. Not a bad way to learn about the history of sweet home Chicago, if we do say so ourselves!
