It’s wild to me that are asexuals out there today who don’t know what AVEN is and probably never will.
I found out about asexuality in 2016, and figured it out for myself in 2017. In fact, I found out because a friend sent me a link to AVEN’s page defining the term. Back then, it felt like if you were asexual then you were on tumblr or AVEN or both. Because that’s where the community was.
And now there’s whole communities on Reddit and Tiktok who don’t even know what AVEN was and how it changed the game for so many of us.
It feels like this history is getting lost and I’m young enough to bring it up with the newer crowds who are my age but I’m also too young to truly know the full history of what it was like.
But I am grateful for what I’ve gotten to experience: finding AVEN for the first time, reading some of the sources for things like the ace ring, even messaging the coiner of “queerplatonic”. I lived through the tail end of the major tumblr acephobia era and I witnessed the social media turmoil the night Bianca Devins died and I get to stick around to watch TikTok become a main information source for young queer people. It feels like a transitional stage into something bigger for my community, and I’m so glad I got to glimpse the roots before it happened.
