When Serena comes into their office at the end of their shift, Bernie’s at her desk. “Why are you still in scrubs?” Serena asks as she pulls on her coat. “Come on, I’m taking you for dinner.”

Bernie looks up, surprised. “You are?”

“Of course, darling.” Serena walks over to Bernie and leans against her desk. “We’re going to celebrate.”

“Celebrate?”

“Yes, your divorce. I saw the decree in your kitchen this morning.” She leans over for a quick kiss. “And after dinner, we’ll continue the celebration at mine. Jason’s at Alan’s.”

Bernie grins. “Give me two minutes to change.”

When Serena gets home from her shift at the local clinic where she helps out two days a week, Bernie is outside lighting candles on the beautifully set dinner table.

“What’s all this?”

Bernie turns to her with a smile and pulls Serena in for a kiss, a gesture so familiar and yet still so new again that goosebumps erupt on Serena’s arms. “I made dinner,” Bernie explains, slightly breathless after a kiss that turned far more heated than expected. “I thought you might be hungry.”

“You cooked for me?”

“I did. Went to the market and—“

“I love you.”

“What was that about?” Serena says as they’re entering her bedroom. “And don’t tell me it was an ‘accident’.”

Bernie flushes. “It was nothing.”

“It was something.” Serena smirks. “And knowing you wouldn’t tell me, I asked the bartender. She said he was making ‘very rude and sexually suggestive comments’ about me.”

“I know I shouldn’t have done that,” Bernie sighs, “but he was obnoxious.”

Serena begins to undress Bernie. “You know I don’t need your protection, right?”

Bernie nods.

Serena kisses her collarbone. “I’m going to reward you anyway.”

“That’s not exactly a deterrent.”

Serena smiles against Bernie’s skin.

“The other— Alex?” Bernie asks, completely surprised. “When did you even meet Alex?”

“Remember when she came to the house looking for you?” Charlotte reminds her. “During your last Christmas leave before the IED?”

“I thought you were upstairs …”

“I came downstairs to get some tea, and heard you talking,” Charlotte confesses. “You and her and dad. It sounded … awkward.”

Bernie winces at the memory of Alex showing up that day because she’d missed Bernie. Awkward was certainly one word for it …
