When ADs are at a convention we expect to be approached by artists, so don’t be nervous. Just be polite, because we are also human beings that get exhausted by the end of the long days just like anyone else.

If they’re alone, just walk up to them and say hi. If they’re in a conversation then work your way into the conversation, or if that feels like too much, just stand off to the side, politely waiting for a break. Trust me, if you have a portfolio or iPad in your hand, we’re going to know what you want. When you get an opening say something like:

“Hi my name is X, I’d love to get some feedback on my work when you have a moment.”

Now they might have time right then, or they might ask you to find them later, or they might set a time to meet up (bc they’re already late for that panel they’re supposed to be doing). Regardless, say thank you, and follow up with them when they suggested.

When they do start looking at your work, remember the best thing to get the most useful advice out of an AD is to tell them what you’re looking for, like:

—"I love the work you do at X and I’d like to know whether you think my portfolio is ready, or what can I do to make it ready?”

—”I know what I do isn’t exactly applicable to what you do but I’d love some general feedback if you can.”

—”I’m want to work in X field. What do you think I need to add to my portfolio to get those kinds of jobs.”

Just remember, although many ADs consider portfolio reviews part of their personal mission—it’s not actually part of our job. We can find plenty of artists to work with without having to give you any feedback at all. We do it because we want to develop new talent and share our knowledge to make better freelancers to work with. So please appreciate the AD’s time. It’s a gift.
