now, the measuring tape is pretty much a smooth flat square, with only a tape mouth, blocking button and two screws that hold it together, so there is no way to attach it to anything.

well. never one to let some measly design oversights to get in my way of looking like a sexy nerd, i decided to drill a hole through the casing, so i could attach a keyring or some sort of lanyard or wristband.

(i had to tape the thing down so the overly excited metal coil that keeps the tape rolled up wouldn’t jump at me like some sort of alien centipede-coded jack-in-the-box)

after an all too brief, yet still ectatic encounter with the stationary drill press (big machinery my beloved), i had to find a thing to attach it to.

a keyring would be the obvious choice, but unfortunately after much finnicking and forcing, i had to conclude that the curvature of the ring just didn’t work with the thickness of the casing.

i was muchly saddened by this (i went to the store specifically to get a keychain, any keychain, and it didn’t even work and i couldn’t even keep the ring because it was all bent out of shape)

thusly beaten, i gave up and went home. and it was raining. and i’d forgotten to have my afternoon snack. so, like, total misery.

but then i looked at my umbrella. specifically, at the completely unnecessary wristband attached to the handle of my umbrella. (if you need to have your umbrella attached to you with a wristband, that’s the weather’s way of telling you you probably shouldn’t be outside)

anyway, i rushed home with a big shit-eating grin on my face and put the two components together.
