Having another little crying night. I blame Tamora Pierce
Beka Cooper
Because sometimes people are as good as dogs 🤭
What ur fic about. High level.. Give us a sampler platter
Beka Cooper, lower city Corus, partnered with Tunstall. set between Bloodhound and Mastiff, late summer/early fall of HE 248. The Cesspool Ripper (a la Jack the Ripper) shows up and starts committing murders that are especially brutal, even for the worst parts of the lower city. the ripper does his dirty work during night watch, but he's terrorizing one of the most vulnerable populations (doxies too low standing to be part of the court of the rogue, those who have few family and friends to help them), and, of course, Beka is determined to protect *all* the people of the lower city. frustrating investigation ensues
Beka and Holborn are courting but already things aren't perfect for them, we see the threads starting to fray at the ends before they truly unravel the next spring. Beka enlists the help of her friends and pigeons and dust spinners and Achoo in the seeking, but with rumors flying, it's hard to determine what's true and what's scummer in the whispers about the ripper...
in an ideal world, I will get this written up this spring and over the summer and publish chapters on the dates that they align with Beka's journal starting in late August, but it's an investigation, so I have to have it all figured out before I can start putting it out there. and oh boy am I far from getting it all figured out! I'm going for as canon compliant as I can be while adapting real facts of the case and investigation. so far I have a timeline and detailed notes through the first half of the case, and it's at least 10k words right now, not even remotely in complete sentences though. maybe my goal of this year is too lofty, but I will certainly try!
George Cooper getting jumped outside the Dancing Dove's kitchens because he'd gotten "stupid" and distracted is just him following in his Ancestress Beka Cooper's footsteps (getting comfortable and getting jumped outside her lodging because she'd been distracted thinking).

Thoughts on Mastiff
The biggest heartbreaking irony about Tunstall's betrayal in Mastiff is that...if he hadn't done it, if he'd just...stayed true to the end and rescued the Prince with Beka, Sabine, & Farmer...he would have gotten exactly what he wanted! The King would have given him a title! He would have gotten what he thought he needed to be "worthy" of Sabine! (Let alone the fact that she didn't want or need him to have a fancy title to be "worthy" of him. She loved HIM for HIM. Sigh...).
It's perfect tragic irony and I hate it but...but it's not bad writing and it didn't come out of nowhere (both criticisms I've seen from fans in the past), either, the signs are there in Terrier & Bloodhound. I think I've only read Mastiff twice or maybe three times, as opposed to the countless times I've read Terrier & Bloodhound, but I think I understand it all better now at 31, than I did as a teenager reading it for the first time (when it came out lol). Doesn't make it hurt any less, of course...sometimes it makes it hurt worse.
other random bit of Nightrunner commentary - I do find myself wondering if Beka Cavish, young, redheaded, impressively skillful member of the Queen’s Horse Guard in a high-fantasy city by the sea, is in any way an inspiration for Tamora Pierce’s Beka Cooper, young, redheaded, impressively skillful city guardswoman in a high-fantasy city by the sea
Beka, disapprovingly: cracknob
Farmer: 🥺👉👈
