Overview

BeerBoard monitors over 50,000 draft lines on a constant basis. This generates incredible amounts of data, but gives great insight to the style and brand trends within the beer industry.

For Father's Day 2017, we take quick and fun look at styles of beer dad would enjoy. This time, we make some suggestions on foods to pair them with. You'll see a theme here though - we like to spend time at the grill.

All beer data is based on pour volumes generated from BeerBoard clients.

Light Lager

* Light Lager is the #1 beer style across America, so chances are, Dad has had one or two along he way.

* Bud Light (#1), Miller Light (#2) and Coors Light (#3) are the top three brands, respectively. Food Pairing

* Wide range of foods: burgers, hot dogs, chicken, grilled fish

BeerBoard's Choice: You can't go wrong with the classic American staples. Burgers or dogs off the backyard grill.

IPA

* The craft beer boom in America has driven IPA tp the #2 style in the country. Bell's Two Hearted and Lagunitas IPA rank as two of the top brands in this category.

* Choices abound within this style. Also try a Deschutes Fresh Squeezed (#3), Dogfish 60-Minute (#4) or a New Holland Mad Hatter (#8).

Food Pairing The strong flavor of an IPA demands a strong dish Try something like grilled meat or an Indian dish.

BeerBoard's Choice: We'll stay at the grill and fire up a nice thick steak. Make sure to get that nice crust!

American Lager

* Led by Dos Equis (#1), Budweiser (#2) and Pabst Blue Ribbon (#3) within the style, American Lager ranks #3 across the country.

Food Pairing Shellfish; light seafood; sushi; grilled pork and chicken.

BeerBoard's Choice: Here we are at the grill again. This time, we're going to enjoy a couple marinated pork tenderloins served with grilled small potatoes.

Witbier

* Witbier is the #4 style overall in the county, driven by the popularity of Blue Moon Belgian White, the #1 brand within style.

* Other popular Witbiers are: Shock Top Belgian White and Allagash White. If you happen to find yourself at a Twin Peaks, grab a Twin Peaks Dirty Blonde.

Food Pairing This style likes light salads and light seafood.

BeerBoard's Choice: Nothing like a big pot of steamed mussels. Fire up the grill and get that kettle going.

Euro Lager

* In recent months, Euro Lager has moved up to the #5 style overall.

* Stella Artois (#1), Heineken (#2) and Harp (#3) are the top three brands within the style. Dad also may like a Hop House 13 by Guinness, or a Magic Hat Mother Lager.

Food Pairing Shellfish, light seafood, grilled pork or chicken.

BeerBoard's Choice: Maybe our favorite pairing yet. Bratwurst cooked in beer! Grab your kettle, combine beer, onions and desired spices. Submerge brats and let them cook for 10-12 minutes.

Amber

* Yuengling, America's oldest brewery, dominates the Amber category as the #1 brand. The style ranks #6 overall.

* Grab Dad a few others while you're at it. Try a ZiegenBock, Brooklyn Lager, New Holland Extra Time or a George Killian's Irish Red.

Food Pairing Barbecue

BeerBoard's Choice: Grab some chicken breasts, slather them in your favorite BBQ sauce and let them go low and slow. Dad will be a happy guy.

Style Info

There was no movement among the top seven styles poured, as each held true to its 2016 rank in 2017. The typical players led the way across the country: #1 Light Lager, #2 American Lager and #3 IPA, followed by Witbier (#4), Fruit Beer (#5), Euro Lager (#6) and American Amber Lager (#7).

We continue to see lighter styles with a solid flavor profile move up the charts. The biggest climber overall was American Pale Ale, jumping five spots from #13 in 2016 to #8 in 2017. Similarly, American Pale Wheat was up three spots to #13 in 2017 (#16 in 2016) and Kolsch moved up four places to #21 (#25 in 2016).

Ciders (#9 overall) was the first style to take a dip, dropping one spot from #8 in 2016.

Brands on the Move

For a good period of time, Modelo Especial has been the #1 beer poured in California. For one day at least, Blue Moon took over the #1 spot; Modelo dropped to #2.

Leinenkugel Summer Shandy was the #12 beer poured on 4th of July. In no surprise, it performed especially well in the Great Lakes Region, coming in at #4.

Stella Artois climbed four spots (#12 in 2016) to check in at #8 overall in 2017. It was the #3 beer poured in the Northeast for the day.

Founders All Day IPA was the biggest climber among brands, jumping 36 spots to #33, proving sessionable beers continue their appeal.
