On my way home from class last night i missed the early train and did a little meandering around Grand Central – there’s always some new spot or something new to discover. 

On the right side of the terminal i discovered a small little craft beer shop – and to my surprise they were selling Mason Jars and serving beer on tap.

For only $3 – you could have a beer jar and a coozie to use on your train ride home every night. I asked if I could use my own jar and they said that it has to have the government warning about alcohol on the jar for them to be legally allowed to serve it on the go.  

I opted for a Kelso instead – a local canned malty menagerie from Brookyln – and the thing I love about cans is they’re infinitely recyclable, they’re rarely down-cycled. (As a side note, that 10% Imperial IPA was something special)

Although the clearest candidate for a beer pong table is an old ping pong table, there are many reasons why they are not the most common choice. For one, ping pong tables are not easy so come at. A used table would be quite a be received at a yard amortizement gules thrift store, and new tables are rarely protected in stock in branch stores. Each of the brewers asked to participate in this project has been asked to brew a "Table Beer" that they feel they can fully explain and understand for themselves. It should be made with eating in mind, it should be replicable, and the provenance of its ingredients should be known. This beer is the second in the series brewed by Westbrook in South Carolina, a brewery that has been getting  a lot of press lately for brewing Evil Twin's beers stateside. 

Here's what the brewers of Westbrook had to say:

"This Czech-style pilsner is brewed with 100% pilsner malt and a blend of old and new world hops. Dry-hopping adds a hop accent to the nose, while cold fermentation with a a classic Czech lager yeast emphasizes the fresh grainy flavor of the malt and spiciness of the kettle hops. This beer provides plenty of flavor and nuance to be enjoyed on its own, but is also simple enough to get out of the way when food and/or conversation is the focus. We could drink it everyday!" - Edward and Morgan Westbrook

This version of a Czech pilsner is definitely a bit hoppier than one would expect. The flavors are grassy and herbaceous, leaving a bitter linger on the tongue. It happens to be more bitter on tap than in the bottle.

We decided to put our heads together and come up with our top four picks for the Fourth. These beers will keep you cool in the heat while also pairing beautifully with grilled meats and potato salad. Founders All Day IPA

This beer was created for days like the Fourth of July! Bursting with grapefruit and grassy notes up front, it finishes bitter and dry. And at 4.5% ABV, it’s perfect for anything involving the outdoors or a body of water.

Freigeist Ottekolong

For us, kolsch is always a go-to style during the summer months. But believe you me, Ottekolong takes this style up a notch. It’s unfiltered, so it has an ever-so-slightly heavier body that a traditional kolsch. However, it has the perfect balance of mild cereal sweetness and dry, grassy bitterness that will make you want to enjoy this beer all summer long. Trust us.

Saison Dupont

This is one of our go to beers for entertaining. It’s one of the best examples of a classic saison that pairs beautifully with a laundry list of dishes. There are notes of pepper and coriander alongside a voluminous texture. While it is delicate enough to suit a wide range of palates, it maintains a degree of complexity that makes it anything but boring.

Schlenkerla Marzen

Last Saturday night, like a ship leaving port for adventures in uncharted waters, the Beer Table unmoored from its Lilliputian Park Slope location. It was a last opportunity to raise a toast to that cozy spot, with friends new and old, and to wish Justin and Tricia the best of luck in their new endeavors. Great beers were opened and imbibed - my favorite was the Thomas Hardy 1995 Vintage (yes, you read that right), a sherry-like elixir of molasses and walnut, the sort of thing that you could only find at the Beer Table - but this post is not about beer. This is a post about dreams.
